Musicians who were great in bands but suck as solo artists
Edited on Thu Jul-22-04 02:35 PM by Mike Daniels
We're talking people who went full-time solo either after they quit or were fired from their band or the band broke up. (no night shedding or side projects). The person should also have been a significant contributor to the band's sound in some way.

Rod Stewart - after his first 4-5 solo works
Any member of Kiss
David Lee Roth
Ted Nugent
Roger Hodgson and Rick Davies (Supertramp)
Sid Vicious
Jimmy Page
Any member of any art rock band except for Robert Fripp, Adrian Belew, Bryan Ferry or Brian Eno - (on edit) or Peter Gabriel

I know there's a ton more but this is what I came up with off the top of my head.

6. Phil Collins

although he started to suck as soon as Peter Gabriel left Genesis.

This is really a reply to the general question, not the art rock queston.

30. Trey? No way!
His solo band is great. Not Phish, but they're still damned good, and fun to see in concert.

I agree about the other two.

Quirky material and definitely not in the classic Fleetwood Mac mode.

26. Greg Lake
of Emerson Lake and Palmer

He was the weakest link of the band and his solo career was an embarassment.
