5. Volunteers is one of the greatest albums ever.
It got me through high school in deep East Texas.

Blows Against the Empire by Jefferson Starship (not the bull shit pop Starship of the 80's) was also a very powerful album.

Paul Kantner is a legend.

11. Ugh!!!
That song should be washed from all of our minds. I think it was voted the worst rock song ever on VH1.

Airplane, no contest, Grace Slick was so badddddddddassssssssssss

7. Have you seen the stars tonight?
Would you like to go up on A Deck and look at them with me.

Man, those Jerry G solos behind that song are wonderful.

I don't count this album as being exactly a Starship record as much as a special case.

Hijack the Startship!

9. That album is the exception to the rule
Jorma +Jack alone are better than anything Starship. Add them to the other parts and you have an amzing band.

8. Airplane. No contest. I believe the photo you show....
is from Altamont. I LOVE the Airplane in "Gimme Shelter." Such fucking drama. Marty jumping into the crowd to confront an Angel who's beating the shit out of someone, and he gets cold-cocked for his efforts. Kantner taking the mike and saying, "I'd like to thank the Hell's Angels for beating up our lead singer, I'd like to thank them for that." And then Gracie gives a kind of passive-aggressive rant about how, "You need people like the Angels...blah-blah-blah" I love Gracie but she was wrong on that day... I "discovered" the Airplane in 1976 when I was 12 and bought "Surrealistic Pillow." Been hooked ever since. By the time I went to college I had all the Airplane albums and Starship as well. I saw J. Starship in concert twice---in '76 and '78. The Airplane was first-rate up to and including "Volunteers." The departure of Balin after that album signaled the end of an era. For that matter, so did the debacle at Altamont.

The Airplane stood for something real, but drugs, fame and ego fucked them up.Wish I'd been there in the '60s to see them in their prime. J. Starship had its moments. "Blows Against the Empire" isn't really J. Starship---more a Kantner solo album. I love half of it and half of it is tedious. But "Have You Seen the Stars Tonight:" is one of my fave songs EVER. I just bought the remastered CD of "Dragonfly" last week and was kinda bummed to realize that the only songs that are any good, from my semi-middle-aged perspective, are "Ride the Tiger," "Caroline" and "Hyperdrive."
