When I was a swabbie, whoever had duty on Friday, also had it on Saturday and Sunday. That way, your duty musters would only screw up one out of every six weekends, instead of 3 out of every 7.
And, I remember that when at sea, only 3 duty sections. That sucked.

Back in the old days: We did many port/starboard. Twenty four on, twenty four off, excluding routine duties. In Japan for three long years it was duty every third day. The other two days was mostly "Cinderella Liberty" Back aboard by midnight. Or else!
