My definition of the 3 genres as a 34 year old "punk" is probably different than that of your average 15 year old high school kid.
And since I'm becoming more curmudgeonly in my life with each passing minute, that's a conversation I will steer clear of.
On edit: Note, I didn't mean my definition was better or more accurate. Just more different.

Ska - It's just gotta have horns.
Emo - No horns. It's called emo for short it's really "emotional" punk. Most of the time the lyrics deal with death or near death experiences. Also the music should sorta go with the lyrics, meaning it should be edgier maybe harder than say ska. I don't think it's required but I've noticed that in a lot of emo there is two singers.
hardcore - Faster harder music. Lyrics usually reaching out to disenfranchised youth.
I'm missing a lot but thats what I can think of off the top of my head.
