Has anyone ever had a cat with a benign lump?
I have two ten year old tigers and the female has an inch-sized lump between her left shoulder blade and spine.

I can't afford to take her to a vet to be examined, so is there any chance that this is just a cyst or something, or should we brace ourselves for the worst?

1. It could very likely be a fatty tumor of some kind
Hepburn had one and they biopsied it. Finally, it just went away on its own. Good luck!:hi:

5. My kitties are a bit chubby these days, so I am very much
hoping she has developed a dowager's hump. *l*

8. I'll call the vet and see how much it would cost, but
odds are it will be more than we have. :(

And anyway, how are YOU doing?

*hugs*

9. I'm okay
I don't know if you saw the thread (I can't remember) but I had to have my oldest cat Tiffany put to sleep on Monday. That was very sad, but she lived a good life. Still, man, what a year.

10. Oh, I am so sorry about Tiffany! This lump has put so much fear in me
that I am trying to spend more time with the kitties. I keep forgetting that they don't go on forever. (You would think I would have learned that after living with dozens of pets in my lifetime, but no. *l*)

*hugs*

13. Thanks, both of you
You know, she did live a good life and I know she's free from pain, but I miss her so much. She always came and sat on my lap in the evenings while I read. She was a one-in-a-million cat, and it was a lucky day when she and I met.:D

3. Not cats
but one of my sister-in-law's dogs used to get lumps that turned out just to be fat deposits (and he was not overweight). He usually got them on chest.

7. they're common in dogs

not so much in cats. if it moves independent of the muscle, sort of floats, it's likely benign. if it grows rapidly, it's a very bad sign.

if so, go to your vet, explain circumstances, and see what they advise. a biopsy shdnt cost more than $30 dollars, if they look themselves & don't send to lab. freq they can tell by looking.

euthanasia is fairly cheap, & much kinder than waiting.

EDIT: cats that have received rabies vac's in that area, the yoke, sometimes develop cancer from the vaccine. i had a cat that developed it that way. he made it, but it cost over $3000 to have him seeded w/ iridium.

feel free to PM, lay knowledge only, but much experience.

i know this is hard, sorry for your worry.

11. My dearly departed Bettina
(DDBetty, for short) had a benign cyst for many years - it started as a very small lump, that eventually developed into a quite large (about the diameter of a quarter) watery mass. We had it biopsied, and it was completely benign, even though it grew rather quickly. Our vet would just drain it every 4-6 months.

14. Has she recently had her vaccinations?
I know you said you don't have the $$ to go get the lump examined, but have you taken her in for her shots lately? My young female, about 2 years ago, had her shots between her shoulder blades and developed about a quarter-sized lump. Vet said it was a reaction to the shots (she now has her shots in her thighs, no probs since) and that in some cases a virulent cancer develops in reaction to the drugs (in about 1-2% of cats), tho thankfully in her case it was benign and just went away.

If she's had shots, watch her for a bit and then try to get her in if it doesn't go away in a week or so. If that's not the potential cause, it could very well just be a fatty tumor at her age...
