Where is Tom Kean from?
As a native New Jersian, I can say that former NJ Gov. and head of 9/11 Commission Thomas Kean is not from the Garden State. With that said, where the hell is he from? Trying to place that accent is driving me bonkers!

4. Once in a while, it almost sounds like a hint of "Down Under".
This puzzles me too.

His family is among the blue-blood founding families of N.J. going back to the 1800 s. He is a grad of Princeton.

Also, Christie Todd {Whitman}.

And Rodney Freylingheusen, Rep from Morris County.

7. Wow, thats very surprising to me
I've lived here my whole life and generally I can tell if someone is from North, South or Central Jersey. But his accent is not like any I heard.

11. It is a Locust Valley Lockjaw accent.
Have you ever heard of this?

It occurs among the blue-blood old families...listen to Kean...he speaks just like FDR.

Very common on North Shore of Long Island, horse-country Jersey, etc.

I was trying to place his accent yesterday - Boston? But Google search said born in NYC and lived in NJ.

10. "Born in Livingston, NJ" indeed!
Edited on Fri Jul-23-04 12:13 AM by secondtermdenier
Former NJ governor Kean is a descendant of NJ's first governor, William Livingston.

William's ancestor Robert was granted a manor in 17th century New York and is an ancestor of Bush I and II and Eleanor Roosevelt.

Some general Livingston info.
