...he did a lot of things first. He was also a good draftsman and painter in his own right. Plus, he took a bullet and lived to tell the tale. Also, he gave more than a few writers and artists their first breaks- Basquiat to name one. And, he was a political progressive. And... and... andy...

13. commentary on crass consumerism, or... |
|
... a continuum of the 'found art'school of art. In either event, he helped found pop art and inspired people like Lichtenstein, Rosenquist, Raushenberg, and Johns- while other movements like 'fluxus', 'happenings' and 'installation art' gained much of their nerve from Andy's influence. He'll go down as a mover and shaker in high as well as commercial art.

15. He destroyed his artistic talent with unfettered indulgence in sex/drugs |
|
I've seen a few early pen and ink drawings by Warhol that actually looked like Michelangelo/Renaissance art. He might have been a great artist but instead went the hedonistic, self-indulgent, personal exhibitionist route. Reminds me of some Cole Porter lyrics as performed by Elvis Costello in a great new film, "De Lovely":
"There's something wild about you child That's so contagious Let's get outrageous Let's misbehave!"
