A WALLABY on the loose in north-east England has become a national celebrity after biting a police officer, terrifying a pregnant woman and causing traffic hazards around County Durham.
Police have been trying to nab the wallaby for more than a month but each time they get close the Australian native hops out of grasp.
The wallaby has caused so much commotion that local newspapers have been writing about its exploits for weeks and national papers have begun following the wayward marsupial's latest adventures.
County Durham locals nicknamed the elusive wallaby Skippy and sightings are so common a police spokesman said he suspected there may actually be a pair of wallabies on the run.
