Oh Boy! FIST FIGHT with Andy the Right Wing Republican!!
To hell with political arguments -- Andy and I got into an honest-to-God fist fight tonight (yeah yeah, I know -- how juvenile) and I think I handled my own. Got one hell of a knot on the top of my head, another right under my right eye and yet another right on my chin.
It was great!! I don't know how Andy looks (Polly and I obviously left right afterwards), but I look like hell. Andy says I never laid a glove on him, but Polly, the observer, says I nailed him a few times.
I called him right after I got home and told him "no hard feelings." This political bullshit is getting pretty deep and I think both of us needed to vent. And even though I have to go cut grass with Mike B tomorrow, Polly still has a standing invite to go fishing with the guy tomorrow.
Polly says she'll never understand men. I understand men just fine -- I'll just never understand right-wing Republicans. But it's been three or four years since I've duked it with someone, and I had a real good time.
John
At 47, pretty sure I'm NEVER going to grow up. Good for me. Good for him, too. Ask me anything.

before clocking him with a left?

5. Funny thing -- we're BOTH left-handed
And I forget that. That's why all my bruises seem to be on the right side of my face. I gotta say -- he's a lot better with his fists than his hero, *, is.
At my age, I really should leave that shit alone. But too soon old and too late smart I guess.
John
He's an old buddy (we've known each other for, like, 12 or 14 years). And it's just another day at the ranch. Like I said, no hard feelings.
I REALLY look like hell. But the teeth are intact.

6. Damn right
It's probably been overdue since the 2002 midterm elections. We both take this stuff pretty seriously.
John
And Kerry IS going to win in November, goddammit.

7. Good for Andy, too
Us old-fashioned guys (at least us old-fashioned guys in Saginaw) realize you don't really call someone a "best friend" until you've had at least one fist fight with them.
John
And Andy IS a good friend.

And I think this is my 6000th DU post, too. How about that?
John
It's been a busy night.
ON EDIT: Sorry, only 5997. Got three rounds to go (so to speak) yet.

9. Shit...I hope your heart is doing ok?
As an ex-HS wrestler, I understand where you're coming from, but still I worry.

Shit, now I have to take care of MY blood pressure. They almost sent me to a hospital the other week. I guess none of us are getting any younger.

10. Thanks, Kheph -- the heart is fine
Polly assures me, upom further review, that the Republidink smacked me upside the head with a beer bottle. That's not seriously going to dent this old German noggin, but it DOES explain the knot up there.
Not getting any younger? Shoo -- that's an understatement.
John
Polly says "hi," by the way and we both hope you're doing well (I suspect Andy does, too.)
You know, this dustup's just neanderthal bonding. But I'll be happy to suggest to Andy that you'll put him in a full-nelson next time this silly shit happens.

Andy does, too -- in a horribly square, platonic, neo-fascist kind of way.
John
You should come on up for a few days when you find the time. Andy will never remember you from FUNDAY, and you can bounce up and down on him shouting KERRY'S GONNA WIN (boing) KERRY'S GONNA WIN (boing) KERRY'S GONNA WIN (boing)!!!

15. I will...as soon as I can afford insurance again
If you missed it, I'm not employed anymore. BUT...good news...Mom's going to start working at home in Sept. and I'm going to be able to help her out and get an income. I won't be making what I made at Truthout, but I'll be comfortable again...I just have to wait until Sept.

Waiting......................

17. If you want a vacation
We'd be happy to spring for the round-trip Greyhound ticket from Indy to Saginaw. You can hang for a week or so and we'll feed you and everything. If you need a break, please let us know -- we'd both LOVE to see you and the sooner the better.
John
This is not idle chatter. Let us know.

21. You've got eight days to ponder
The next check comes in on the first. And we both (all) hope you can clear the schedule. We'll cover the expenses and you'll get a chance to finally check out the splendor that is Saginaw.
John
Looking forward to it. I'll show you my Broad Ripple jock jacket. I figure since I'm collecting letterman jackets, I might as well have one from David Letterman's high school (inside Indianapolis comment, that).

John
Venting is a good thing. Dents and all.
ON EDIT: This IS, officially, my 6000th post at DU.

18. My mom once beat up a boy in Trout Lake, Michigan
Because he insisted she was six years old. She said she was five, he said she was six, she said she was five, he said she was six and she clocked him.
John
She was five (and FDR was President, BTW, grandpa was in the CCC which is why she was in Trout Lake). It IS possible to get into fights for even stupider reasons than politics, but probably not once one is beyond first grade.

Edited on Sat Jul-24-04 01:39 AM by 5thGenDemocrat
The answer, alas, was (b).
John
But she loves me in spite of it. And she DID just admit she thought it was pretty cool that I did it -- however badly. She does wish I'd act my age, though.

Edited on Sat Jul-24-04 12:39 AM by 5thGenDemocrat
It's Fox News' job to be fair and balanced. It's mine to be implacable and unbalanced.
John
Like I've said here several times in the past, I'm not a tree-hugging liberal -- I'm a sock-you-in-the-nose liberal. And I found out tonight that maybe it's time to find another niche.
You know -- we share our birthday (Oct 4) with both Charlton Heston and Susan Sarandon. I guess the date is big enough to encompass all types.
Andy shares his (May 17) with LynneSin. I'll bet that just makes her day.

24. Oh
don't change - it sounds like you had fun tonight. There are many times I feel like socking people on the nose but haven't since the school bus incident in 2nd grade. It was ugly and profanity was involved although no liquor. The nuns didn't like 2nd grade girls acting so unladylike! Does that make me a crappy Libra? :o PS I am 50 this year - I believe I am your elder!

26. Got me by two years
Though we have those repressive nuns in common.
When I was in third grade at St Andrew's, a guy named Rusty Furlo and I used to get into fights on the playground at lunch just about every day. We didn't dislike each other -- it was just something to do.
Rusty grew up to be about three inches taller and 40 or 50 pounds heavier than me -- nobody I'd want to tangle with as an adult. We'd laugh about the whole thing years later.
He died a few years ago. I miss him.
John
It isn't like I'm an aggressive guy. My last fight had to be three or four years ago and that one, like tonight, was just a dustup. I won that one though -- I'd call the one tonight merely a draw.

27. Quick calendar correction more than an hour later
I meant to say "May 14," not May 17. Must've lost my mind.
John
I would've corrected it earlier, but I had to grab a hot shower. I feel more or less better now.
