I don't "get" Sarah Brightman.
I dunno. I'd never heard of her, but my date the other night is a huge fan. We watched part of a DVD of her in concert, and I don't 'get' it. It's like "Andrew Lloyd Webber Lite", or something. Not pop. Not opera. "Pop-era"?

What's the deal?

1. Voice like a friggin' angel...
...formerly married (still married?) to Andre Previn; classically trained...what's not to get?

4. She was never married to Previn, was she? Previn's current wife is
the incredible violinist, Anne Sophie Mutter.

Brightman was married to ALW. I met them both at Radio City Music Hall. I don't get it either.

6. Ah, yes! My bad
She was NOT, in fact, married to Previn. I SO get these divas mixed up. The rest still stands, though. She's got a dynamite voice.

I've heard him in many a movie theater.

3. She's a horror
She was married to that ALW fool. He's slightly more of a nightmare than she is. But just slightly.

5. Wait... she was married to Webber AND Previn? Okay, I'm starting to get it
The fix is in.

But isn't ALW flamingly gay?

8. Brilliant voice, perfect for Phantom. Now she's lost a bunch of weight
and sings a bunch of new age stuff. My GF likes her....and I am also being forced to see Josh Groban next week! oy

9. She has a really amazing album called "Eden"
Edited on Sat Jul-24-04 08:02 AM by sundog
very hard to describe -- seamlessly fuses classical, ambient, & pop. It's a pretty amazing experience, really high on my list of good albums. She does originals plus covers of Hooverphonic, Kansas, Ennio Morricone -- all sorts of stuff.

I've heard her other albums, but I'm not particularly crazy about any of them. Watching her "live" can also be disturbing. Just listening the Eden album is great experience IMHO.

11. It seems to me she stole a lot of Kate Bush's shtick
She even changed her voice to sound Bushian.

But "Eden" is an undeniably beautiful album. The Morricone tune, "Nella Fantasia", gives me chills every time I hear it.

13. Yeah, Nella Fantasia
is also intense for me. Like I said, I can really live without the rest of her stuff, and I can understand why certain people can't stand her.

I just have a soft spot for Eden. I first listened to it at night from my patio, staring up at a starlit desert sky. A moment like that sticks with you, so go to that place when I listen to the album.

12. As singers go
she can't sing worth a fig. Horrible pitch placement, absolutely no sense of timing--things no one with any rudimentary musical training would let pass.

Like a whole lot of the current crop of "singers," big time promotion and a musically untitutored publc combine to make these frauds come across as "great" singers. Andre Bocelli is another fright who has been palmed onto the gullible pubic. What he does to opera texts is pure massacre. The unsuspecting public also doesn't seem to realize the amount of electronic doctoring that goes on to make the recordings of these third rate (dare I say musicians?) sound acceptable.

14. I like Bocelli...
I'm not an aficionado, so his "massacres" don't really disturb me...
