Since there are 285 million Americans, or so I have read, that means 174 million Americans have higher tax bills. I know I have a higher tax bill.

As for the homeownership claim, it's also a double-edged sword: since Bush's economy has depressed real estate values and Alan Greenspan has cut the prime to almost nothing--one percent, IIRC--it makes no sense for most of these first-time homeowners to rent.

50 year olds who've lived from place to place might not easily get a 30 year home loan.

People with no credit history won't get a loan.

People with anything less than uber-pristine credit can't get a loan.

It costs more to maintain a home and the owner has to do all the upkeep.

There are other scenarios...

I know a lot of people have to rent; about forty percent of my business is rental agents. (In Fayetteville, where about half the population is transient, we have yet another reason to rent instead of buy--GIs who want to use their VA loan guarantee don't want to use it on a house they'll only own four years.)

But there has always been a dividing line between "it makes more sense to rent" and "it makes more sense to own." As Bush's policies depress the realty market while Greenspan pushes down the prime, that line has sunk lower than ever before.
