1. What an ambitious undertaking! I'd have a hard time |
|
listing one favorite per year but I might be able to narrow it down to five or ten a year. Or twenty. ;-)
I was very glad to see you listed "What'd I Say." When Ray Charles died, I was annoyed that the media never mentioned that great hit of his, which was getting a lot of play up through 1962, at least. Of course most of the talking heads on cable news are too young to remember, and we now have proof they are too plastic to have educated themselves. Their loss!
In that same period, I was hearing John Lee Hooker's "Boom Boom" a lot, too, and still think it's one of the great songs of all time.
Strange your list has no evidence of the British Invasion, though. You do miss some great songs that way! No Dylan, either. Ah, well, still it's a good list.

7. Regarding Dylan and the British Invasion.... |
|
Remember, these are only my #1 favorite songs of each year. If I were to do, say, a yearly top ten, the Brits and Mr. Dylan would both be well represented!

off his list is my bet; same place as Bowie. :D
clearly NightTrain is more of a soul guy than a punk or proto-punk.

6. "A complete absence of...the SEX PISTOLS"? |
|

I suggest you take another look at the list, 1976 in particular.
And "without Bowie," the Sex Pistols would still have existed, and they'd have sounded exactly the same. Chances are, none of the Pistols even knew who the fuck Bowie was!

9. Do you remember 1981? It was a pretty lame year for music! |
|
"Urgent" was about the best song from '81 that I could readily recall. Hell, Junior Walker's sax playing alone raises "Urgent" head and shoulders above pretty much everything else I know from that year!
