My uncle. He would have been with us in November. The first paragraph of his obit follows;
"He was a member of Central United Methodist Church, Hamlin, a U.S. Army veteran of World War II, a member of the 101st Airborne Division (The Screaming Eagles) and served in the Battle of Normandy on June 6, 1944. He earned the following medals: the Bronze Star, the Presidential Citation, the ET Ribbon with Bronze Arrowhead and four Combat Stars, the Glider Badge with one Combat Star, the Good Conduct Medal, the Belgium Citation, the Certificate of Merit, the ATO Ribbon and the World War II Victory Medal."

I posted this for the benefit of those who think we Democrats don't love our country. He was just a good man who did his best.

Sounds like a hero as well as a good man -- the quiet sort of hero who returns home after the fight to be the bedrock of our communities, not the splashy Hollywood "heroes" and favorite sons who strut around on sound stages and wear unearned flight suits at photo ops. And there is a profound difference.
Our thoughts are with you and your family as you remember your uncle.

He was a good representative of a VERY brave generation. Why, however, was the first thing in his obit about a church?

Your uncle had the glider badge, which I assume means he came in on gliders for the invasion rather than storm the beach. My grandpa flew those gliders. Isn't that something? All of those guys were amazing. I hope you got a chance to talk to your uncle about his life because it's so important we remember these folks and the sacrifices they made. May he rest in peace.

I know this man, and have had breakfast with him many times at the Bobcat Restaurant. That's where I heard about his demise yesterday while having breakfast. I to live in Hamlin. And Jerry was as good as they come.
Godspeed.

my friend. Yes, he was a good man and loved his fmily and his country. I last saw him in '94 but I always have thought of him as a hero. He spent a lot of time at the Bobcat with his friends and I'm glad you got to know him.

18. When I hear of the passing of men like this, |
|
I am always reminded of a very poignant moment in the movie "Clear and Present Danger."
Jack Ryan arrives from Washington to meet with the CIA spook Clark. Clark asks about Admiral Greer and is informed by Ryan that Greer is dying of cancer. Clark shakes his head sadly and says, "He was a good man."
I feel that sometimes understatement can speak volumes more than high praise. I did not know your uncle, but he reminds me of my uncle Edward who died April 24th.
He was also a WWII vet. Fought in North Africa, Sicily, Italy and France. The only Texan more highly decorated than him at the end of the war was Audie Murphy.
My uncle was a kind, generous and gentle man who was also a great influence in my life. I ride motorcycles because he rode motorcycles. Americans like him are rare. If someday I am worthy to stand in his shadow I would be honored.
I say the same thing about my uncle and yours. "He was a good man."

20. We owe a lot to your uncle and his "band of brothers"... |
|
These citizen soldiers left their families and firesides to defeat the worst kind of global tyranny.
My deepest condolences to you, Dave, and to your family. The brave men and women of your uncle's generation will not be forgotten.
