11. Okey dokey
"We can work it out" - The Beatles sing about a couple who broke up. The lyrics make it sound that the female is wrong and the male is right.

"Day Tripper" - the Beatles sing about a man who wants monogamy, but the female is a bit 'loose'... Nancy Sinatra took this song and reversed the gender labels to something that actually makes more sense; She wants monogamy yet men are the sluts. (Her version is more entertaining overall too.)

"American Woman" - This is the 'red herring' answer. The Guess Who use metaphor in a thinly veiled attack against the US goverment; speaking of America's policies and not wanting to be involved. (GREAT song, BTW, it's amazing how some things don't age...)

20. So...
Women sing about the reverse subjects all the time. I don't think the Beatles are sexist for pointing out that it can happen the other way around. Because it CAN.

25. There's not a single word specifying a sex in "We Can Work It Out"
so I can't see how it can be sexist.

Your comments about "Day Tripper" are based in stereotypes. You can easily say that it's a song about a woman who knows what she wants, and is in control. Sexist?

27. I respectfully disagree
I find "American Woman" repellant.

Using the powerless members of a society as a metaphor for the elite is unconscionable. The women of America did not bear the responsibility for the war or for the "ghetto scenes" that the song derides. It equates evil with femininity.

I appreciate the motivation behind the song, nut I think the execution not only fails, but completely backfires.

46. The lyrics make it sound that the female is wrong and the male is right.
So it is sexist to suggest that it is possible for a woman to be on the wrong end of an argument? Please point out to me where the song says that one gender is always right or wrong, then maybe you'll have a point.

Pot calling kettle black here.

13. American Woman is the red-herring answer...
This poll is not sarcasm though.

The Beatles had a music style that redefined the industry, and when they were good they were GOOD, but some songs really got on my nerves. The two in this poll being prime examples. They are sexist and grating to listen to.

33. Yeah, The point of the poll is to take
three songs that you have to look at with a microscope to find the alleged "sexism", and decide which one is the most sexist.

Persoanally, I would have picked The Guess Who song, were I going to participate in this silly poll, but I guess (who) I'd be missing the implied socio-political metaphor.

That's not to say there aren't sexist songs, but I think you picked some of the world's weakest examples. Maybe you've got an axe to grind with the beatles, or something?

26. I love this song, but -- come on -- it's lyrics are almost indescribably
sexist, or whatever less-loaded word might apply:

Well, she's all you'd ever want
She's the kind they'd like to flaunt
And take to dinner
Well she always knows her place
She's got style, she's got grace
She's a winner

She's a lady
Whoa, whoa, whoa
She's a lady
Talkin' about
That little lady
And the lady is mine

Well she's never in the way
Something always nice to say
Oh, what a blessing
I can leave her on her own
Knowing she's okay alone
And there's no messing

And so on...c'mon, sing along now!

28. Here's John Lennon's worst example:
Well I'd rather see you dead, little girl
Than to be with another man
You better keep your head, little girl
Or I won't know where I am

You better run for your life if you can, little girl
Hide your head in the sand little girl
Catch you with another man
That's the end ah little girl

Well I know that I'm a wicked guy
And I was born with a jealous mind
And I can't spend my whole life
Trying just to make you toe the line

You better run for your life if you can, little girl
Hide your head in the sand little girl
Catch you with another man
That's the end ah little girl

Let this be a sermon
I mean everything I've said
Baby, I'm determined
And I'd rather see you dead

You better run for your life if you can, little girl
Hide your head in the sand little girl
Catch you with another man
That's the end ah little girl

I'd rather see you dead, little girl
Than to be with another man
You better keep your head, little girl
Or you won't know where I am

You better run for your life if you can, little girl
Hide your head in the sand little girl
Catch you with another man
That's the end ah little girl
Nah nah nah
Nah nah nah
Nah nah nah
Nah nah nah (fade out)

A hundred million, roughly. Said over and over again that not only was it not a very good song, that it was sexist and advocated violence towards women, and the he regretted having ever written it.

I posted that in reference to "Daytripper" being sexist. Lennon regretted that song for the rest of his life, and made that point abundently clear with songs like "Woman is the nig*** of the world".

34. Driver 8-Sexist Rape Anthem
"And the train conductor says, take a break, driver 8..."

Or is he really saying, "Drive HER eight..." eight what? eight ways to sunday? Is the train "conductor" conducting a gang-rape, there in the engine room? Clearly, the phallocentric georgia rockers (all MEN) are promoting an anti-woman agenda with this hate-filled song. And the "train" metaphor.. How many times have we seen the patriarchal act of male penetration sex (which is, of course, always rape) symbolized as a TRAIN entering a tunnel? So many trains, so many female victims.

36. Here's a REALLY Sexist Song - "Wives and Lovers"
Edited on Sat Jul-24-04 06:49 PM by CO Liberal
Wives And Lovers
Jack Jones
(Burt Bacharach/ Hal David)

Hey! Little Girl
Comb your hair, fix your makeup
Soon he will open the door
Don't think because there's a ring on your finger
You needn't try anymore

For wives should always be lovers too
Run to his arms the moment he comes home to you
I'm warning you...

Day after day
There are girls at the office
And men will always be men
Don't send him off with your hair still in curlers
You may not see him again

For wives should always be lovers too
Run to his arms the moment he comes home to you
He's almost here...

Hey! Little girl
Better wear something pretty
Something you'd wear to go to the city and
Dim all the lights, pour the wine, start the music
Time to get ready for love
Time to get ready
Time to get ready for love

37. And Another - "Stand By Your Man"
"Stand By Your Man"

Sometimes it's hard to be a woman
Giving all your love to just one man
You'll have bad times and he'll have good times
Doing things that you don't understand

But if you love him please forgive him
Even though he's hard to understand
And if you love him, whoa be proud of him
'Cause after all he's just man

Stand by your man
Give him to arms to cling to
And something warm to come to
When the nights are cold and lonely

Stand by your man
And show the world you love him
Keep giving all the love you can
Stand by your man

And if you love him, whoa be proud of him
'Cause after all he's just a man

Stand by your man
Give him to arms to cling to
And something warm to come to
When the nights are cold and lonely

Stand by your man
And show the world you love him
Keep giving all the love you can
Stand by your man

38. And Another - "I Gotcha"
I GOTCHA
Joe Tex
(Tex)
As transcribed from "'70s Radio Hits: Vol. 6"

I gotcha, uh-huh, huh.
You thought I didn't see ya now, didn't ya, uh-huh, huh.
You tried to sneak by me now, didn't ya, uh-huh, huh.
Now gimme what you promised me, give it here. Come on!

Hey!

Good God!

Hey!

Hey!

You promised me the day that you quit your boyfriend
I'd be the next one to ease on in.
You promised me it would be just us two, yeah.
I'd be the only man kissin' on you, yeah.
Now, kiss me. Hold it a long time, now hold it.
Don't turn it a-loose, now hold it.
A little bit longer, now hold it. Come on!
Hold it. Hold it. Hold it. Hold it.
Now ease up on me now. Hey!

Good God! Hey!

The girl's alright, y'all. Ha-ha.

Good God!

You made me a promise and you're gonna stick to it.
You shouldn't have promised if you weren't gonna do it.
You saw me and ran in another direction.
I'll teach you to play with my affection.
Now, give it here.
You never should've promised to me, give it here.
Don't hold back, now give it here.
Don't say nothin', just give it here.
Come on, give it here.
Give it here!
Yeah!
Give it here!
Give it to me, now.

Good God!

Hey!

I gotcha!
Shouldn't made a promise to me.
I gotcha!
You never should've promised to me, gotcha.
Give it on, here.
I gotcha!
You thought you got away from me, didn't ya?
I gotcha! Ha-ha-ha.
Oh, I gotcha!
Give it on up, I gotcha!
Give it on here, I gotcha!
You tried to sneak by me, now didn't ya? Ha-ha.
I gotcha!
Oh, I gotcha.

41. And Yet Another - "It Must Be Him"
IT MUST BE HIM
Vikki Carr

I tell myself what's done is done
I tell myself don't be a fool
Play the field have a lot of fun
It's easy when you play it cool

I tell myself don't be a chump
Who cares, let him stay away
That's when the phone rings and I jump
And as I grab the phone I pray

Let it please be him, oh dear God
It must be him or I shall die
Or I shall die
Oh hello, hello my dear God
It must be him but it's not him
And then I die
That's when I die

After a while, I'm myself again
I take the pieces off the floor
Put my heart on the shelf again
You'll never hurt me anymore

I'm not a puppet on a string
I'll find somebody else someday
That's when the phone rings, and once again
I start to pray

Let it please be him, oh dear God
It must be him , it must be him
or I shall die, Or I shall die
Oh hello, hello my dear God
It must be him but it's not him
And then I die
That's when I die

43. Other: "Under My Thumb" by the Stones...
UNDER MY THUMB
(M. Jagger/K. Richards)

Under my thumb
The girl who once had me down
Under my thumb
The girl who once pushed me around

It's down to me
The difference in the clothes she wears
Down to me, the change has come,
She's under my thumb

Ain't it the truth babe?

Under my thumb
The squirmin' dog who's just had her day
Under my thumb
A girl who has just changed her ways

It's down to me, yes it is
The way she does just what she's told
Down to me, the change has come
She's under my thumb
Ah, ah, say it's alright

Under my thumb
A siamese cat of a girl
Under my thumb
She's the sweetest, hmmm, pet in the world

It's down to me
The way she talks when she's spoken to
Down to me, the change has come,
She's under my thumb
Ah, take it easy babe
Yeah

It's down to me, oh yeah
The way she talks when she's spoken to
Down to me, the change has come,
She's under my thumb
Yeah, it feels alright

Under my thumb
Her eyes are just kept to herself
Under my thumb, well I
I can still look at someone else

It's down to me, oh that's what I said
The way she talks when she's spoken to
Down to me, the change has come,
She's under my thumb
Say, it's alright.

Say it's all...
Say it's all...

Take it easy babe
Take it easy babe
Feels alright
Take it, take it easy babe.

45. One More - "I Enjoy Being a Girl"
I Enjoy Being a Girl
(Rogers & Hammerstein)

I'm a girl, and by me that's only great!
I am proud that my silhouette is curvy,
That I walk with a sweet and girlish gait
With my hips kind of swivelly and swervy.

I adore being dressed in something frilly
When my date comes to get me at my place.
Out I go with my Joe or John or Billy,
Like a filly who is ready for the race!

When I have a brand new hairdo
With my eyelashes all in curl,
I float as the clouds on air do,
I enjoy being a girl!

When men say I'm cute and funny
And my teeth aren't teeth, but pearl,
I just lap it up like honey
I enjoy being a girl!

I flip when a fellow sends me flowers,
I drool over dresses made of lace,
I talk on the telephone for hours
With a pound and a half of cream upon my face!

I'm strictly a female female
And my future I hope will be
In the home of a brave and free male
Who'll enjoy being a guy having a girl... like... me.

When men say I'm sweet as candy
As around in a dance we whirl,
It goes to my head like brandy,
I enjoy being a girl!

When someone with eyes that smoulder
Says he loves ev'ry silken curl
That falls on my iv'ry shoulder,
I enjoy being a girl!

When I hear the compliment'ry whistle
That greets my bikini by the sea,
I turn and I glower and I bristle,
But I happy to know the whistle's meant for me!

I'm strictly a female female
And my future I hope will be
In the home of a brave and free male
Who'll enjoy being a guy having a girl... like... me.

47. (You're) Having My Baby - Paul Anka
Having my baby
What a lovely way of saying how much you love me
Having my baby
What a lovely way of saying what you're thinkin' of me
I can see it, your face is glowing
I can see it in your eyes
I'm happy in knowin'
That you're having my baby

You're the woman I love
And I love what it's doin' to you
Having my baby
You're a woman in love
And I love what's goin' thru you
The need inside you
I see it showin'
Oh, the seed inside you baby
Do you feel it growin'
Are you happy knowin'
That you're having my baby

Girl: ("I'm a woman in love and I love what it's doin' to me")
Having my baby
Girl: ("I'm a woman in love and I love what's goin' thru me")
Didn't have to keep it
Couldn't put you thru it
You could have swept it from your life
But you wouldn't do it
