What is Liebfraumilch?
Is it white wine? What does it taste like and can you use it to cook with if a recipe calls for white wine or red?

What is Liebfraumilch?

6. I guess it wouldn't be too good to cook with
It's marked down from $13.99 to $2.99 a bottle at the store by my house.

I was going to use it in a recipe that calls for white wine but if it's sweet I don't think so :puke:.

4. I always thought it sounded really nasty
Liebfraumilch. Don't they have fetish magazines devoted to that kind of thing? Geez. Then again "toilet water" always grossed me out too. Who the hell dabs toilet water behind their ears??

11. White wine --
sweet. Don't cook with it. It is, of course, German and the Germans like sweetish, white wines -- if you like sweet wine it would probably go well with pork or chicken dishes in cream sauce, hot foods, Chinese food.

13. Doesn't that mean "love lady milk"?
Not that I'm partticularly adept with German....still, this compound word does provoke some bogglement in the mind region.

19. not quite
More like "nice Lady" or "beloved lady". It's a name for the virgin Mary.

16. A cheap, white and sweet wine from Germany, mainly for export
Also called Liebfrauenmilch, named so because it once mainly was grown on the vineyard of the "Liebfrau" collegiate church - Liebfrau is a name for the Virgin Mary.

BTW, Germans used to like sweet or semi sweet wines - this has changed very much in the last decades.

18. Export grade German White Wine
Very sweet; often a mix of several wines. When touring a vineyard you frequently get to hear something like "the concrete tanks over there aren't used any more, except for Liebfrauenmilch".

Offering it is considered an insult.

20. Cooking wine should be as dry as possible.
Liebfrau or Riesling are probably not appropriate for anything but dessert wine.

Old rule: cook with wine you would drink. So if the recipe calls for a white - use a nice white table wine - shouldn't have to spend more than $10 for a passable bottle. And if you have a sip or two while you're cooking, everyone is happy!

Edited on Sat Jul-24-04 06:12 PM by Kellanved
There is no good Liebfrauenmilch, but there are excellent dry Rieslings.

Of course $10 sounds pretty expensive for an acceptable table wine...

23. I didn't want to spend $10.00
It only calls for 1/2 cup of wine and I will end up tossing the rest of the bottle out.

24. well
Then I'd say definitely not Liebfrauenmilch.

It might be OK for a wine mousse, but is totally unacceptable for cooking otherwise. It's just that I'm used to acceptable wines at €4-5 a bottle; €8 for good (not excellent) ones.

26. Sweet German wine. OK for drinking
...especially for college students not yet accustomed to the taste of wine.

Not OK for cooking. Too much sugar.

Try a bottle with Chinese food or a curry.
