1. Yup, cats
So much more dangerous to live with than dogs. And conversely, offering no protection against outside intruders. To know a cat and to somehow achieve a modicum of his respect takes an iron will, a steely constitution, an absence of hemophilia in one's family medical history, and a less than obsessive fondness for upholstery.

mostly true.

mr. tonio, foto below 1ce woke my SO while i was out late one night when we lived in midtown atlanta, sat on her chest & yowled till she woke. when she got up she noted an odd light, looked out the window, and the apartment building next door was afire. FD arrived 3 minutes later.

but tonio was a most exceptional specimen of an exceptional species.

Sort of. All but the "no protection" part. I've had two cats that perched in the window and growled/yowled when strangers approached. One of them, a former wildcat, would gleefully attack intruders if given the opportunity. More protection than my dog, as much as I love her. She'll enthusiastically bark at you to make sure I know you're there, and then demand lap and cuddle time before she lets you in.

28. Doodle is our 'watch cat,'
Though you wouldn't know it from this pic -- we've called her the 'vicious biscuit' for years, now, because she goes from cute to wolverine in seconds flat.

She, too growls like a dog when she hears something outside at night. She's vicious, too. Unfortunately, she transfers aggression, so if somebody gets too close to her when she's wound up at the window, she'll take a swipe at them -- including Mr. Nownow, who wound up with a band-aid on his ear one night when my 'don't get too close to her when she's pissed' didn't sink in soon enough.

40. My tomcat did the same;
for about a year after I had him neutered. He was a 4 year-old stray when I took him in, and he delivered punishment daily. Before I caught him and took him in to the vet, he would meet me in the yard or garage and demand stroking. If I stopped before he was ready, he would deliver a punishing blow, claws open, to my hand or wrist. If I didn't stop to stroke him at all, he would deliver the punishment to the ankles. Once he started coming in the house, he would punish if you didn't let him out when he demanded it. The night another tom entered the yard to challenge him, and I didn't open the door, I paid a price.

All of that drifted away with the testosterone and with the onslaught of civilization. He ended up being a lap kitty. He was always bossy, but learned to use other, more gentle methods of persuasion. No more teeth and claws.

8. Hey, jukes, was just going to post a question for you...
...can cats handle melatonin? We're getting ready to move (you know my male-feral-abandonment worry issues -- he hasn't been around the last few days; he's fickle, probably over flirting with my neighbor and her 15 cats) and we have three "domesticated" cats and one semi-feral who lives in our garage, roams freely via a kitty door and doesn't interact that much with our three other cats (one of whom is EXCEEDINGLY territorial - a rather wacky and aggressive female).

So, the move is in about a month. Moving one state to the next, about an 8 hour drive. I'm going to have our vet sedate the semi-feral for the drive, but once we get there I'm worried about her bolting. Worried also about one of our other cats, who has grown up in this house (been here 10 years); he's the love of my life and I don't want him to wander off! I love all my kids but have a special bond with this cat. So, how do I get them relaxed and willing to hang around our new place for a while when we first move? I don't want to drug them, but thought perhaps a little melatonin in the food might keep them mellow until they get used to the smells of the place, chill out a bit from the move, etc. NO real option to have them all be inside kitties; the semi-feral would freak out, and my territorial female goes bonkers if she can't roam a bit. We're looking to rent a house on 20 acres, so there should be plenty of space, but I haven't seen that house yet (will in a week) nor do I know if it's "ours" yet. And then we'll probably buy our own in a few months to a year, depending on what we find and if we really do like our new area (so there's transition #2 in the near future). My friend gives some melatonin to her elderly dog and it helps him sleep through the nights; I know cat metabolisms are very different and wonder if you have any info/thoughts/suggestions?

Thanks so much! I'm exhausted and going to bed but will check this thread in the a.m. Cats cats cats cats cats cats cats cats.......

never tried it, but it shd be fine. it's a natural brain chemical in all mammals.

felliway spray, a synth facial pheromone, works very well for calming cats. shd be able to get it @ your vet.

if they're really scared, a single benadryl crushed & mixed in treat food, like sardines or tuna, will come them w/o "doping" them. make sure there's plenty of fresh water available, it's slightly diuretic.

i'll PM this to you to save you searching.

15. hi - thanks....
just going to bed now (had to make sure semi-feral had kibbles after a raccoon raid). I'll check for Feliway, thanks. I'm going to have to find a safe place for her when the movers are here, then deal with the move itself, I don't want her to run off just as we're getting ready to leave!

I really appreciate the help!

They also have the most reasonable prices for most pet-related items.:-)

Good luck with the move! I don't envy you. My friend said that most cats would prefer staying in the same house with new people than moving to a new environment, LOL! When she moved, her cat spent the first few days hissing at everything in sight. However, this is a particularly ornery cat.

30. I had a cat with allergic reaction to flea bites.
One or two flea bites and She would scratch and bite herself so badly that the vet had to give her cortisone. I suggested to the vet that it might do her well to be sleepy/drowsy for a few days while she healed up so that she couldn't inflict more damage to her skin. The vet agreed and told my to get some allergy tablets at the drug store. "Chlorpheniramine" also called "chlor-trimetron". It's a standard over-the-counter antihistamine that people take for allergies. It worked great made her sleepy enough that she stopped licking and scratching. And She healed in a few days. So consult your vet about the proper dosage and good luck with the move. :hi:

42. Sure they are.
In some ways. Many other animals, not just cats, are superior to humans in some really important ways:

1. They are honest. They are themselves. They never pretend to be something they are not.

2. They are reliable. They can be counted on to be themselves in any situation. They don't bring out a different personality when your back is turned. They are much more trustworthy than people.

3. They are not judgemental. They just partner with you. They don't care what you look like, how much money you make, what you wear...they just care that you do your part in the partnership. Take care of them.

As far as cats go, they are stronger than people. They are more athletic than people. They are smarter than some people. They are better hunters, have more patience, and are better at problem solving than some people. They are more self-sufficient than many people.

My family has always consisted of animals as well as people; more animals than people. My animal family members have always been better people than a large number of the humans I've dealt with.

Ever smell that stuff?
Weirdly it makes me calm too.
When I moved last time I wiffed the feliway because I'm curious like that,I wanted to get a better snif of the scent which is interesting...I was spraying the inside of my cat carriers,to get them ready..and NOTHING I tell you nothing pissed me off for the rest of the day. Now I use it on myself if I know I'm going to visit people that irritate me.They always comment on what a good mood I am in..I dare not say I feel good because I wiffed cat facial pheremones...otherwise I'd be sooo tempted to claw your face off right now..

I honestly have never detected it. That's what I told my friend who I recommended it to. I used it for a long time, hoping to calm my kitty that I brought in from outside, and never saw much change in her because of it, but never thought anything about my reaction to it. I was just concerned about my cat. I love your take on this and am considering getting some more. It's easier to procure and more reasonable than Prozac, LOL! Just please don't claw my face off! Stay on the Feliway!!!:scared:

31. My very masculine husband happens to think cats RULE
He thinks they are the best pet ever. He has horrible allergies to cats, but takes medication daily just so we can keep Clarissa Marie. When we had to put Thunder to sleep in December, he fell to his knees crying in the backyard, my big lunk of a man. Thunder was his baby and was in so much pain and only lived to be eight (kidney problems).

Clarissa Marie rules our house, including the dog, Hannah Rose.

Husband thinks cats rock because they are independent, have their own minds, don't require a lot of maintenence and look cool.

I tend to agree, though I do love our dog, too.

36. To be a cat..

I got three fur children,Rustle,Vinnie and Sparkle.
But I find I am feline inside..
I learn alot from my feline roommates, more than I learn from people..

Cats really are better at being humane than humans are, that is why I know I am not a human at heart. I resigned from the human race years ago.

A few years ago I heard about a momma cat who ran into a burning building 5 times nearly killing herself to get all her 5 kittens out 1 by 1.Her story was on CNN .A fireman helped her when he saw her when he was called about the building, he got her to a vet and she and her kittens lived but she was scarred badly her ears burnt off and she was blinded..So strong was her love and desire for her kittens to live..

Humans invent nut ball crap like MSG,sell it as a "food taste enhancer"while they invent a fat phobic culture where fat gets you demonized.MSG is used to fatten lab rats for obesity studies and they put this shit in "diet" foods..what a joke..and any cat with a nose wouldn't trust half the shit humans eat.It probably smells like a chemical plant to them. Cats are content as they are.Two male cats can intimately curl up together on the couch without wondering "am I gay?"or "Does my butt look too big in this fur"?

If more humans would learn more cat ways, how many people could Bush motivate to kill themselves in a fake war? There is too much fun to be done right now to do shit we don't care about...no thanks .You cannot coerce a cat to do anything by force unless you fight him first. And it's amazing that a ten pound cat can wound, foil and totally frustrate the hell out of two 200 pound humans with opposable thumbs, and still not get put in the damn cat carrier.
If people were more like cats would they care what anyone else thinks about how big their butt is,or whether god exists or not to the point of a raging neurosis?
Would they treat their kids and loved ones the way they do?
Would they be so easily trapped into bad situations they can't get out of by big stupid scary people as often as they do?
