5. ...I adopted a feral cat.

He just died about a month ago. That's why we're looking now. Grumpy was close to death when he started hanging out on our back porch. It took him 3 years before he actually moved into the house with us. He was wild and angry, but came to be quite the cuddle hound with me after he settled down.

We'll probably try to get a couple of little mates from the Humane society.

7. Hard to say..

..he was full-grown, probably at least a few years old. So Grump must have been at least 8 when he died. It's a mystery, how he started out. When we found him, he didn't have hardly any teeth. Poor guy. We built a little house for him to live in outside, with a lightbulb and blankets for warmth. Couldn't even hardly get close him at first.

11. I took in three feral kittens

One was 6 months old the others were about 7 weeks old
The two younger ferals had been abandoned by their mothers because they were VERY sick. They had to be bottle fed.

These three guys are HUGE now!

The one that was the sickest and scrawniest as a kitten (he was literally about a day away from dying) weighs about 14 pounds now and he's only a year old!

These are also the smartest and most peculiar acting cats I have ever owned...they act more like dogs than cats and all three of them love kids!

Each one represents a major argument that took weeks to resolve. They're all strays with physical problems. I love my husband, but my conscience wouldn't let me ignore them. I'd do it again. But that's me.

..that find their way to our house. We've had two such permanent vagabonds in the last 12 years. No, can't turn them away as long as they can at least minimally get along with us and the other cats. Poor little guys. It seems so unfair to be born in the world with no one looking out for you and just having to rely on chance as to whether you'll have a home and something to eat.

13. Kittens are available

year round, thanks to irresponsible owners. They're simply easier to find in the summer. But you can also adopt an adult, and skip some of the annoying kitty behavior, if you want.

In fact, if you want two cats, contact your local shelter and ask them to call you when they get in a pair from the same household who ought to be adopted together.

I've done volunteer work at a shelter, and the saddest cases to me were always the ones where we got an animal because the owner had died or moved into a nursing home and no one was willing to take in the pets. All too often these wonderful cats or dogs would wait, and wait, and wait and just not get adopted. So, rethink the two kitties thing and think two older cats who otherwise would be euthanized.
