4. I have heard
that Spybot and Aadaware work well but occasionally conflict but still I have heard that the two together should take care of most things. I use SpyBot and like it a lot.

8. Some of the newer "home page pop-ups" can not be deleted with Spyware
You may end up reinstalling until they figure these crappy things out.

18. I kept updating Spybot with no effect
When I'd run it on a home page pirate. My service guy came in re-installed with Mozilla. That has worked for the past month. He told me my Internet Explorer was a fuzzball that picked up internet lint and had to be removed.

21. Many here like Mozilla Firebird
I use Avant Browser as my default browser, which is an IE shell. It does have some protection.

I use Firebird as a backup browser, in case I have problems with Avant.

With a modified HOSTS file (see my post below), and current antivirus/firewall protection, I rarely see any spyware/hijacks/trojans/etc.

6. Adaware doesn't conflict with most.
You run it to clean the system. Only if you have two blocking programs do you get dueling "he's trying to change your homepage" "I know you are but what am I" messages.

12. Is your selected homepage coming up?
Or is it some strange search engine?

If it's a strange search engine, it may be a browser hijack.

AdAware gets rid of these. Be sure to update it (look for icon on upper right of the box when you open the program).

You can also try these two programs:

Hijack This:

Direct download link:

CWShredder:

Direct download link:

When your HOSTS file is fixed, put in a dummy one that will block the little nasties. This site shows you how:

Also, make sure your firewall/antivirus software is up to date.

It worked well for me. No spyware in months!

20. It may a browser hijack script
Edited on Sun Jul-25-04 03:06 PM by RatTerrier
Follow my directions previously for clearing out your HOSTS file. "Hijack This" and "CWShredder" work well.

It could also be a virus, worm or trojan. I've never seen that kind of homepage before. Looks like that address is aimed at some sort of file name (the '.dll' ending looks like it).

Likely, the HOSTS file has something to do with it.

11. Bazooka catches everything the others miss,

but you have to remove them yourself. It gives you instructions how to do it, but if you're not comfortable with registry editing, then get somebody who is.

It will catch all of the spyware though, and it's 100% free.

23. Go to webroot
and get spysweeper, there is a free version and a better one that you must buy, but the free one defends your homepage and keeps you from getting hijacked.
