Assuming there's a market for any of these...?
Thx!

10. AAS degree in MIS, semi-related to DBA activities... |
|
I know QBASIC, dBASE III, and MS Access. The AAS degree told me of the concepts, along with RPG and COBOL programming languages, and Lotus 1-2-3 spreadsheets (of course, I learned Excel as a replacement...)
Along with PC support (my primary job) I create complex reports for users by integrating and managing numerous databases...
I do know some VBS scripting but I am learning Visual Basic... Gotta get SQL in there someday too.
Of course, there's a management position I might apply for...

Just wondering if one type is more stressful than the other. One of my childhood friends became a pediatric nurse about 25 years ago, and she's still in hog heaven...

7. I'm in nursing school. |
|
It's degree #2. My first one pays next to nothing and it was a big mistake to do.
I'd have to say working in a NICU (neonatal intensive care unit) is very stressful. My mom did that for years and burnt her out pretty bad. My husband is a respiratory therapist who also worked in a NICU and he got pretty stressed as well (just left is is starting something else tomorrow in fact). Emotionally, dealing with people with critically ill newborns is pretty tough. I know I'm not going that route. I'd like to work either with postpartum moms, women's health in other ways, or in mental health. Not sure yet.

I think you need to consider some issues.
1) Peak Oil (we're going into a recession, and energy will be expensive)
2) Outsourcing (Restarting the great American job machine is unlikely)
I voted for web design, because that's portable - with a computer, and a reseller account with a hosting company, you can keep overhead low and work anywhere.
But you really might want to consider something with government - whether we're talking school district or federal government. The present volatility of the job market is (in my opinion) unlikely to change anytime soon.
I expect us to win, but President Kerry is going to have a very big mess to clean up. And events such as Peak Oil and an ever stronger China may interfere with his plans.

I'm in government. But they are starting to phase out some jobs, one of which will eventually be mine. I must change what I do in order to stay... positions will likely open up but I need education in order to get them... I do have a degree and some experience, and am in good standing, but need more.
I like web design, but getting the clients is not easy... I'm a techie, not a marketing rep... I also need to start learning the heftier web languages as a web designer is potentially 4 jobs in one: Graphic arts to make it look nice, programmer to implement it, database manager (for online shopping), and security administrator (keeping the nasties out).
And you're right on peak oil and the great American job machine. It's a pity corporations don't take more consideration of America's talented citizens. But I'm going to do my darndest to do the best I can until the end. And it's only going to get more competitive until another energy source replaces oil (we can only hope). And competitive is what I shall be.

16. Do not go into web design... |
|
not at least in this economy. I have been a freelance graphic/web designer for many years now and most of my clients have dried up, ie no budget for design work. I am making a career switch soon into Massage Therapy. I start school in a few weeks.
If all else fails, there is always porn as mentioned above. :-)
