Okay. What's so great about baseball? |
|
And, why do we see so many threads about this game in the Lounge? I just don't get it.

1. it is fun to watch the fans.....and if you have ever played that adds to |
|
it... I played varsity softball in High school and played on later teams....so it is something you can identify with....and it is nice weather and hot dogs....and a team to root for and being outside in nice cool and hot weather...

In all seriousness, baseball is basically watching a bunch of really hot men play a more dirty version of ballet. Love it, especially the tight pants.

3. If you have never played nor had no rooting interest from a young age |
|
it would be difficult to enjoy the game. It is finesse and nuance interrupted by a 100 mph fastball, a monster bomb, or a rifle shot from the hole at shortstop. It is the one sport where the action is initiated by the defense and even the lowliest scrub has a chance to be a hero. To wit, Bucky Fucking Dent.

I find it slow and boring. I've been to a few Texas Ranger games and I entertain myself by people watching, eating, staring off into space, or reading a good book.

It's the greatest spectator sport of all-time, not to mention one of the great participation sports of all-time.

6. I love minor league baseball. |
|
Not so crazy about major league baseball.
You can afford to take a family to a minor league game, buy them dinner, and sit on grass in most stadiums to watch the game, if you want. The players aren't so perfect that you can predict how the play will go as soon as the ball leaves the bat. And you watch the game with families and average folk who do this every weekend, rather than people who are spending a large chunk of their disposable incomes under the watchfull glare of skyboxes. And the players are almost always available after a game to autograph things for the kids.
I love baseball for those peaceful moments between pitches or innings, when the grass lays still in the outfield and the moths flutter in the lights. I love the kids in their little league uniforms. The young couples paying more attention to their own conversation than the game. The ardent fans near the press box discussing the stats and the old couples taking it all in, in those moments that seem like nothing has changed in 60 years.
Baseball as it exists in those moments is to me the gentle heart and deep roots of what is best in America. I forget about wars, and corrupt politics, and industrial greed, and just listen to the grass in those quiet moments.

I do like the wanna bee teams..in norfolk we have the tides which are Mets wanna bees....and they kids get to run the bases after the game... i just sit and watch them...they are so cute...some have no idea....there are hundreds of them that do it...and then they have fireworks some nights....and just good fun....and the parking is safe...
haven't been to a major league game in a long time..don't even know what they costs.

I'd rather do just about anything instead of watching baseball...including watching golf or bowling. For me, it would be preferable to take out the trash than to sit and watch this silly game!
I know there are legions of baseball fans (even here at DU). But, I just don't get it. I guess, "to each his / her own".

do you actually watch golf and bowling, and, if so, what are so great about watching those activities? Or are you just going overboard in your commentary?

I don't watch them too often anymore.
But, I usually enjoy watching the summer and winter olympics. They seem to move a lot faster.

19. So you watch Olympic Softball then? |
|
And curling?
At least you don't watch football, the slowest sport of them all!
I'm sure of that much.

To each his/her own, I guess.
If you're ever in the Minnesota/Dakotas area, I'll take you to a live game of Twins baseball. My treat. Maybe you'll think it's better then?

I love the Twins. No, really. For some reason, they're one of the teams I root for, even though my faves are elsewhere. But when are they gonna get out of that there Dome?

Obviously, you're a real baseball enthusiast. You know the sport. I don't . But, I'll buy lunch! How's that?
I'm sure it would be a fun experience.
