For what corporations are you a whore for?
Edited on Mon Jul-26-04 05:58 PM by noahmijo
As sort of a B side to all the corporate bashing that goes on at DU, we all have to admit there are some companies we shop from and love.

So basically what companies do you love or shop from alot?

For me it would be:

1. Apple (I've gotten so much stuff from them I think Jobs is going to send me a personal thank-you note soon)

2. Amazon

3. Ben and Jerry's

4. Krispy Kreme (I'm suing them next week for making me fat!)

5. Nintendo

6. Sony

7. Albertson's and Costco for my grocery and assorted needs.

5. How is Amazon unfair?
I buy a lot of stuff from them and I don't want to feel like I contributed to screwing people.

17. The Theory...

The theory is that because they put a "Buy Used" link up right next to the buy new option, sometimes on the same day the title is released, that this takes away from an author's royalties. It's important to note that some of these so-called "used" sales are from companies that buy overstocked items from retail chains. The author has already received a royalty for these, if he or she got a decent contract.

Anyway, Amazon being unfair to authors isn't a proven fact, and I'm not sure about it one way or the other because I haven't seen a specific study of this that includes any concrete numbers, but I'll admit to being skeptical. I know a few authors personally that credit Amazon with increasing their book sales and thus their royalties. I know others that wouldn't have sold a single book without a service like Amazon. (Small publishers or self-published books.)

On the other hand, I do know I have a tendency to buy the used book if I see one in good condition, especially if the book is an older book. I'm not sure how my purchases have directly affected authors. As I said, I've seen no numbers.

33. I don't buy that.
Edited on Tue Jul-27-04 11:41 AM by HuckleB
I didn't buy it when it came to music sales, and I don't buy it when it comes to books. Once you've sold your product, be it a car, furniture, cd, bicycle, stereo, or book, the owner should be able to sell it, if he or she so chooses. That's capitalism, like it or not. This idea that books and cds shouldn't be sold used is just an attempt to change the playing field to the advantage of some over others.

Besides, why pick on Amazon, while forgetting that Krispy Kreme has gone incredibly sneaky a number of times in its history, displacing local businesses by going to landlords to undermine their rental contracts before they can be renewed. I'm so happy to note that Krispy Kreme sales are down in Portland, while local donut shop sales are going up!

36. I don't really buy it either...

I admit to the possibility that selling a used book right next to a new book might, in the long-run, result in lower total sales enough for someone to notice. But, I don't see this as unfair. By that logic, libraries are unfair because they give free access to books.

As for Krispey Kreme, I honestly hate their donuts. If I wanted a ball of sugar, I'd eat a ball of sugar. The local shops all have better, and cheaper, donuts.

11. Tivo.
I love my Tivo. It's the perfect product for media-and-political junkies like myself who don't have patience for commercials and VCR programming.

And, since I've had mine since May of 2001, I'd have to say it's a product that not only works, but maintains its quality for years to come. A rarity, these days, indeed.

26. It's a private company
owned by the German Albrecht family, billionaires who bought it around 1979. There are about 200 of them now.

I guess as a privately owned company, it doesn't fit the category, but it's the only store I regularly shop at!
