The funny thing about that Team America movie |
|
Is that long time South Park fans will probably recognize that this looks like it's going to be in the style of the best episodes of the show where they skewer something by pretending to support it.
Over on SouthParkStudios.com they have a bunch of links to early reviews (from Comic Conventions) and they seem to think it's a slam on Bush because they portray Team America as over the top Super Patriots who run around blowing stuff up cause it's cool. (or if you're an Adult Swim fan, it seems like the Ripping Friends as puppets).
I know folks here find it hard to believe that Matt and Trey bash both sides, but I've watched the show since day one and the only took two things personal:
1. Barbara Striesand, since she refused to play in Denver for some reason, and Matt and Trey took it as a personal slam to their home state.
2. Phil Collins, for winning the Best Song oscar over "Blame Canada". As Matt said in the Season 4 DVD commentary "I wasn't expecting to win, but I wasn't expecting to lose to Phil Collins either"
Matt and Trey enjoy poking at people they think take themselves too seriously but consider the following:
They made a TV show making fun of Bush (That's My Bush) Bush has been potrayed as someone obsessed with bombing stuff, even Heaven. They took a pretty good swipe at the "country songs cashing on 9/11" movement. They include a gay character (Big Gay Al), who while stereotypical acting, is accepted in what is often referred to as a redneck town. They almost always portray hunters as gun nuts. Jesus is a public access TV host. Religion is constantly questioned and parodied. The media is a source of constant parody, with South Park's TV news station featuring a midget in a bikini for an on the scene reporter.
What it comes down to, and they say so in the DVD commentaries, is that most of the episodes come from stuff that's in the news alot and they get tired of hearing about.
So yeah, they do take shots at some liberal ideals, but they take shots at conservative ones too and usually with more venom. What I have noticed is that the longer the show's gone on, the more mean spirited the jabs tend to be, but I hardly think Matt or Trey will be pulling the Bush lever in November.
To be honest, I'd wager they were the socially liberal non-voter type more than anything else.
(for those wondering, this rant was brought to you by all the "OMG SOUTH PARK D00DZ ARE FREEPERZ!@!" threads that have popped up since word of the Team America movie came out)
