It was Hearst’s trademark of the time to rail against the “liquor and sex orgies” of Hollywood, not out of a sense of decency - he knew scandals sold newspapers. Hearst himself had a mistress. Orson Welles alluded to this in his thinly veiled biopic of Hearst, Citizen Kane. The dying newspaper magnate’s final word in the film was “Rosebud” - Hearst’s pet name for the clitoris of his actress girlfriend, Marion Davies.

The movie RKO 281 (The RKO project number for Citizen Kane) indicates that Rosebud was William Randolph Hearst's pet name for Marion Davies's vagina (not clitoris).
Scriptwriter John Logan claims his story sticks closely to known facts, but he declined to give the source for this factoid. It has been rumor in Hollywood for years, but no one really seems to know if its true. Logan's script has Herman 'Mank' Mankiewicz (Welles' writing partner) give Welles the factoid. I don't know if this is what really happened, but RKO 281 is a great movie that puts Kane into a whole new light.

Orson Welles had rumbled with Hearst and the inclusion of the word "rosebud" in the film was a very personal "fuck you" to Hearst. Wells loved the idea that Hearst would be driven to distraction knowing the entire world had his personal nickname for Marion on their lips.

I believe the story is covered in one of the "Hollywood Babylon" books.

I'd always heard this Rosebud story too - no idea if it's true or not. But I did want to chime in here to defend Marion Davies. She was a very talented comedienne whose talents were often wasted in the dreck Hearst had written for her. He loved her in serious period-pieces where she would often be dressed as a man (apparently, that was his particular kink).

Finally, she broke out of that crap and starred in Show People, written by the great early screenwriter Frances Marion. She is absolutely brilliant in this - anyone who ever gets a chance to see it should. It pops up on TCM's silent Sundays once in a while. It was made in 1927 and is silent, of course.

Marion was universally loved by her friends and coworkers as a warm and funny person. Hearst was a notorious tee-totaler and wouldn't allow liquor at "the ranch" (Hearst Castle in San Simeon), but she would always have some in her rooms. She drank. A lot, in fact.

Their relationship was quite bizarre and unconventional. Hearst's wife wouldn't grant him a divorce because she was Catholic, but she agreed to living on opposite coasts. When Hearst lost much of his empire, Marion bailed him out. When he died, his sons wouldn't even let her attend the funeral.

As much as I like and respect Citizen Kane, I feel Marion was really shabbily treated by her represeentation in it. Sadly, it's what most people think of when they hear her name, but she was a far more complex person who had quite a bit of talent.

Hearst was a typical control freak and mentally abusive lover. Davies was unfortunately so tied to WR that her career stalled and she was unable to achieve the type of fame that an actress of her calibre is usually granted. Welles' version of Davies drew on her weaknesses and problems and amped them up to create a picture that did not do the woman it represented justice.
