Man Revives Chocolate Labrador With CPR

Mon Jul 26,11:16 AM ET

FARGO, N.D. - When a 3-year-old chocolate Labrador retriever named Maddy got tangled in a 10-foot rope securing a trampoline floating on a lake, owner Matt Tollefson didn't think twice. Tollefson dove in after her. When he dragged the dog's lifeless body out, Tollefson again didn't hesitate. Her eyes were open and her tongue hung to the side of her mouth. Tollefson performed CPR.

"She's part of the family," Tollefson said. "If she's going to go, she wasn't going to go like that." Tollefson alternated compressions on Maddy's chest and blowing air in through her snout.

Two minutes into it last Monday, Maddy showed signs of life.

The dog is a little swollen and is taking two steam baths a day to help her recovery. She also is on antibiotics. "Maybe she doesn't, but it seems like she looks at me differently," Tollefson said. "She's still the same dog. There's just more of a bond now."

2. While I commend the man
It's not unusual to give pets MTM/CPR. Ask any cattery/Kennel owner.

he is a wonderful man, nodowt, but you're right about animal CPR. i've done it 2ce for abandoned kittens. requires a very delicate touch to not over inflate their lungs, nor over-squeeze the chest cavity. a lab wd be less crucial, i'm sure.

i lost the 1st kitten 24 hrs later, had been w/o food for too long before i found him.

#2 is mr. edward, a healthy 3 y.o. 16# male yellow tabby.

4. The Red Cross...
offers pet first aid classes that include CPR. You can check with your local RC to see if they offer them.
