Simpsons to feature gay wedding
Edited on Tue Jul-27-04 03:47 PM by Mike Daniels
http://www.nypost.com/entertainment/28140.htm

July 27, 2004 -- SOMEONE on "The Simpsons" is com ing out of the closet and could get married.

"Simpson" producers, including creator Matt Groening, let the news slip out at the San Diego Comic Conven tion over the weekend. But they did not say who it would be.

The way-too obvious choice would be Waylon Smithers, evil nuclear-power tycoon Montgomery Burns' timid toady — who for years has harbored a not-so-secret love for his fragile, scheming century- old boss.

Smithers sexuality has long been a line of discussion among Simpson aficiona dos. And he's professed his love for Burns several times just before disaster seems about to strike. ..... (continued in link)

------------------------------------------------------------------

I'd say that it's likely to be Lenny and Carl although that would only be slightly less obvious than Smithers.

My guess is they'll take a more obscure character - one that won't have to be followed up every week.

If it's not Lenny and Carl I'd go with Eddie and Lou of the Springfield PD

Any other possible candidates?

Patty is the one.
Patty & Smithers were riding on the "Still in the closet" float during the Springfield Gay Pride Parade.

12. Flanders would be the ultimate
I'd love to see that!

Side show Mel is a good candidate too.

Didn't Rod and Todd both appear gay in a flash-forward segment once? Maybe it was a dream sequence, I can't remember. Milhouse has documented homosexual tendencies in his permanent record.

18. I think Flanders is too risky
It would be a surprise but I think you'd run into too many problems with viewers since you'd be mixing Rod and Todd into the equation. The Simpsons pokes fun at both sides of the spectrum but they've never really been that forward in terms of advancing any particular agenda.

Is there a regularly occuring gay couple on live TV sit-coms/dramas who have kids? I wouldn't know as I don't watch too much outside of FOX on Sunday.

If not, I don't think the Simpsons are going to aim to be that groundbreaking by giving R&T two dads.

26. It'd be groundbreaking, Flanders married, finally comes to terms
he is gay, besides, a right winger good ol' christian man coming out...what's better than that? I'm sticking with Flanders!

5. Lenny and Carl
Smithers would be too obvious. Lenny and Carl could be bi, but I could see them marrying.

13. Oooh. Good one
Since Homer's the one doing the weddings that would be an interesting approach to the story.

Remember the Terminator spoof where the robotic Homer scanned Skinner and rated him as a "possible Homer-sexual" ?

19. Most likely one of the gay guys that let Homer live with them
They'll become kinda sorta recurring characters like the nerds Homer went to college with.

22. My money's on Lenny and Carl, too
They've been getting really "thick" in the last two seasons. And, besides, it would also be interacial, making it even more of poke in the eye to the Born Again Taliban.
