DU Pirates Fans: Benson Trade Strategy

I know that there are a few Pirate fans on here so I'm going to run a bizarre idea by yinz.

Assuming the Pirates trade Benson (and I'm sure they will), is it possible that Dave Littlefield is actually trying to improve THIS YEAR's team for a late season run at the wild card?

(You now think I'm probably nuts). But here's the reasoning. The team as is now probably can't catch the Cubs, Giants, and Pads because our hitting's too light. However, lets assume that the Pirates trade Benson to Minnesota for a power hitter like Justin Morneau who could play first(move Craig Wilson to a corner OF position). Then you bring up VanBenscoten or Bullington from the minors and pray it all holds together 'til October.

I think Fogg, Perez, Burnett and Wells are good enough. Mesa's been better than expected. Bay might be better than Giles, the Wilson boys have proved they're for real, All we need is an innings eating 5th starter.

Unlikely. Yes.
Impossible. No.

All I want is another shot at those friggin' Atlanta Braves. I still haven't forgotten '92.

watch it! We are bloody, but unbowed. They are winning a lot of games and they beat Atlanta last night. YEAH!

I too remember 92. Heartbreaking. They are a scrappy team and we wish them well.
