Why did I just pay someone $400 to rid this place of carpenter ants, and now there's carpenter ants again!

3. Try busting the Carpenter Ant Union |

Worse case scenario, they go on strike, picket your house, and then no other bugs will cross the picket lines.
I think this solution will work for you and is a lot cheaper than $400.

4. How to get rid of ants |
|
I bought some "Grant's Ant Stakes" and here is what works for me:
Forget the instructions on the box and do this instead:
Take a stake, run it under some hot tap water to soften the gel inside(just a minute or so), coat a toothpick end with honey or jelly and smear it inside the poison container through the hole and some on the outside of the body.
Place the toothpick(it has residual poison on it) and the stake on an ant trail.
The ants will swarm it, taking the bait back to the nest. This will kill the colony. I think the honey or jelly is the key factor here to get them to eat.
My technique works 99% of the time and costs pennies compared to exterminators.
Try it! ;-)

They eat it up like candy and defend it to the death.

This way you won't deal with poisonous fumes. Mix one part Borax and one part sugar. They eat it and bring it back to the colony and die. It can be dangerous for pets, but sprinkling a little red pepper over it will keep pets away. We had major problems last year and eradicated the entire colony with this method. Another method is instant grits. They eat it and it expands in their stomachs and they blow up.
