I want some controversy, people. Those things people hold dear, this heroes they admire, that product they can't do without, but you hate. Oh, but you hate them. And they love them. And you fester. Rather than build up that tension leading to inevitable violence, let it out here.
What sacred cows churn your stomach?

I'll start (but of course). I have no time for the Grateful Dead. I find them bland, meandering and tune-shy. So sue me, hippy.

29. Good question. Answer: The confusion of puerility
with wisdom.
To be fair, actually, yes I see some value in the Harry Potter books, mostly because they have prompted young children to read more, and Rowling writes fairly good English prose, good enough to provoke the curiosity of children and get them to read more and to learn better English.
And so, well, actually, I think Harry Potter might be good for children after all.
Oh alright. I guess I don't hate Harry Potter after all. I thought about it and I've changed my mind. :-) Now that I think more about it, now I do like Harry Potter.
(Good liberals know how to change our minds after being prompted to think more... :-)
Now let me think about something else which others love, which I do not love.
I've got it:
Dogs.
I don't like dogs.
Cats are Gods among us. I worship cats.
No hatred for dogs, but no love either. Cats are Gods and Goddesses among us, and so let us be grateful to Cats.

3. "The Star Spangled Banner" is just about the worst song ever penned.
I fucking hate our National Anthem. It's impossible to sing, the music itself is awful, and the whole damn thing is drenched in war imagery.

"America the Beautiful" should be our National Anthem.

Particularly 'God Save the Queen'. I don't know why they persist with that when they could use 'Jerusalem'.

12. But methinks "Jerusalem" is a bit left-leaning for some of the stodgier...
...elements of British society.

Oh, they may sing it, and they may not quite glom on to its revolutionary spirit -- but come on:

I will not cease from mental fight,
Nor shall my sword sleep in my hand
'til we have built Jerusalem
In England's green and pleasant land.

Not exactly "Rule Brittania," that. I can't imagine the Iron (expletive deleted) sang those lines without the slightest twinge of irony. Come on, man, she LOVES the dark, Satanic mills!

I think we hear enough of "God Bless America" as it is, thank you.
We don't need to have it as our national anthem. I understand how Irving Berlin felt about this country, but you are so right. "God Bless America" is utter treacle.

"America the Beautiful" is such a positive song. :-)

I have a limited vocal range and just can't sing "The Star-Spangled Banner". I got trashed on another board once for saying that, for being "unpatriotic". Well, I guess God is unpatriotic, since He's the one who gifted me with a poor singing voice.

I actually tried to listen to her the other night - my fiancee wanted to listen to it to help her sleep. I had to move to the living room couch because:

1) Tori's songs sound like they are written by a depressed 14-year-old,

2) Her voice is annoying as hell

3) I'd rather fall asleep to Enya, or classical. Hell, AC/DC is better sleeping music.

'Like A Rolling Stone', 'Ballad Of A Thin Man' and 'A Hard Rain's A-Gonna Fall' are some of my favorites of his, and if you hate all of those, there are others I'll recommend. A lot of people are turned off if they're started with something like Blonde on Blonde.

79. I am neutral to Dylan's voice
But I find his lyrics very powerful, moving, inspirational and challenging. And I think his voice helps in communicating his message across on some of his songs.

But I agree with you to some extent. Garrison Keilor did a wonderful spoof of Dylan with his "Bob Wilson" character

Edited on Wed Jul-28-04 09:16 AM by jpgray
I hate Harry Potter by reflex having never experienced any of it (I have no idea why--lots of people I respect tell me the books are great).

I hate London Calling by experience. Although I think "Lost In The Supermarket" has served as the blueprint for entire albums by Pulp, I think LC is mostly filler.

59. Mary Jane
I'm pretty libertarian about the girl politically, but frankly, it puts me to sleep most of the time in the handful of times I actually tried her. Plus, I got sick of living with someone, who, for many years, had to have her several times a day just to not be in a pissy mood, spending way too much money in the process. She's gone now, except for a rare visit, but she did some irreparable harm especially in the situation with a recovering person who fails to acknowledge the entire picture and the continual reminders of how not doing it is some kind of "gift" to me. I'm just not into it and in the future don't want any relationships with someone who is.

I've had experiences with her many times in high school (mostly just to be cool) but the few times I've hung out with her in my adult years, it just made me paranoid then sleepy.

Hell, I can do that all on my own! What a bummer!

So I kinda can take it or leave it but I still think the girl should be totally legal.

Scarface is one movie that I do not understand the draw of. Maybe if I saw it when it came out I would like it better, but now it seems to aspire to be average and that is about it.

97. Little Kids and their Parents
The little shitbags never SHUT THE FUCK UP! I was on an 8 hour flight from Heathrow to Newark and this little girl was crying for the entire flight. I got less than an hour of sleep during that flight.

Another time was the time I saw Spiderman 2. The little shit machine behind me wouldn't shut up either. The kid couldn't keep up with the story. Every 2 seconds it was "mommy look, spiderman". Don't bring a four year old to a PG-13 movie, let alone any movie that is going to be crowded.

The last 2 times I was at the library, some idiot had her kids running around screaming. And then they alwasy migrate to the table I'm sitting at.

Now, to their parents...

I don't care how you raise your kids, but when they start getting on other people's nerves, they stop being cute and they start being another reason you should have used a condom.

And I don't care what other people say. If you are going to be in a crowded, quiet place, kids don't belong. Get a baby sitter or wait to see the movie until you have one.

two or three year old with them and it BOTHERED THE CRAP OUTTA ME. He kept getting up and walking around and whining and talking loudly ("want PA-CORN! WANT PA-CORN!") and they kept shushing him, but NEITHER of them would take him OUT!!!!!

Finally adults on rows behind us starting shushing him and the mom took him out. Guess what? THERE WERE TEN MINUTES LEFT IN THE MOVIE!!!

DAMNIT.

The first minute my daughter would have been disruptive I would have gone out with her. Or better yet, I would have had a sitter or just not gone. Husband and I saw a lot of movies alone (just one of us, not both) when she was young.

161. Don't feel bad
I'm a parent and half the time I get totally annoyed at other people and their kids. I mean HELLO? Do you NOT notice your kid is being a disruptive little thing? I blame the parent more, by the way.

Because of that I'm always sensitive to my daughter not disrupting people. It IS easier because I have ONE kid, but I could take this kid literally ANYWHERE and you wouldn't know she was there unless you saw her, if it is an occasion that demands silence. She's been to world-class art museums, been going to plays since she was three (she's almost ten now), nice restaurants.

It's all in the home training, lol!

They just about ruin Christmas for me every year, especially when other people get all misty-eyed over them. I'm also not wild about Amazing Grace.

I am also immune to the charms of Friends, Seinfeld, Survivor, seafood, team sports, Maria Callas, lemon merengue pie, almond flavoring, any drinks in the whiskey family, camping, foods made with vinegar (adobo, vindaloo, salade Nicoise), or most fruits except berries, melons, and apples.

especially if it involved someone cramming a bottle of Vitameatavegamin up her ass, shoving her face down in a vat of grapes and then shredding her to ribbons on a conveyor belt.

That'll cause controversy. I hate John Lennon, though I should give him credit for giving Paul McCartney's music from the 60s a dark edge. But jeeze louise, what a pretentious, sophomoric psuedo-intellectual. His so-called "philosophy" defines puerile and sophomoric. He was spiritual, I grant him that, but he was also personally a pig and an asshole. He sang in a monotone half the time, his songs have the rythmic complexity of football cheers. Perfect example, "all we are saying is give peace a chance," Great protestchant, but pure shit as music. From later in his career, we get this little gem of John Lennon philosophy: "life is what happens while you are busy making other plans." Christ almighty, that migh as well be on a Hallmark card, in fact, I have read many Hallmark cards that are deeper than John Lennon. Most. Overrrated. Beatle.

155. I hate sports.
All sports. I don't hate kids who play soccer or teenagers whose lives are saved by organized sports, etc. I mean big time professional sports with the overpaid players, huge egos (owners, coaches, players, agents, everyone), inflated ticket prices, etc.

Sports are something to me that could be simple and enjoyable but we've taken it and turned it into something obscene.

I hate it when everyone around me is splooging all over themselves over professional sports. Sorry, but I don't get it. Pro sports discussions bore the CRAP outta me.

On a serious note, I've had enough of CG movies. Shrek, Finding Nemo, Toy Story, just end the madness already!

Edit: I forgot to add that I hate children. They're loud, overspoiled, and bratty. It makes me sick to think I was like this only 15 years ago. :(

163. I forgot
I also hate the sacred cows of reality TV, most programs on TV, ok most TV period, SUVs (hate them with all the fiery passions of HELL), and I don't HATE babies, but I HATE the way other people assume if you are a mom (I have a nine year old daughter) that you'll just AUTOMATICALLY coo and drool over someone's baby and just be DYING to hold it.

Um, sorry to break it to you, but I'm NOT dying to hold your baby, even though I've HAD a baby. I love my daughter silly, but baby ages are NOT my favorite. If I could have given birth to a 3 or 4 yr old, that would have made me happy, though that would have hurt a hell of a lot more than a nine pound newborn.

I find babies to be slobby, wet, messy. They get whatever crumby thing they are chewing on in your hair, people always seem to hand them to you right when they pooped, etc.

I know that makes me a horrible person, oh well. Leave the baby holding and cooing over to people who adore babies. I don't. So sue me.

181. Football - American Idol - Fast Food and....
I watched football games on TV when I was young so my dad would have company while he watched. I even know the rules, etc., but it all seems so silly to me. I can't see why people get so into the sport.

I dislike most reality shows, but I just couldn't understand the big deal that was being made about American Idol.

Fast Food! Sure it is nice to have food fast, but YUCK, most fast food is unpalatable. I won't even bring up the lack of nutrition and the over abundance of all the fat in fast food....well I guess I did bring it up.

Hip Hop Music! I've tried, I really have tried. I guess it is a generation thing. I guess not everybody can get what amazing music blues is. <evil grin>.

What passes as Country Music these days.

Commercials that pry on people's insecurities in order to trap into buying their useless products. I hate when I hear people go on and on about commercials. Commercials are all propaganda, not entertainment.

SUVs, SUVs, SUVs, SUVs, SUVs, SUVs, SUVs, SUVs

A lot of Steven Spielberg's movies. I know people love them. My husband loves Steven's movies. To me they are so smultzy that I feel cheap and dirty with the ways these movies play with people's emotions. Take AI for example. Much of the movie was great, but they had to tack on that terrible ending. The ending didn't even fit with the movie. I can't forget ET here. Everyone loves ET. My ex told me I'd love ET. <gag> <gag> I just don't get it! ET was cute, but the way people talked about it, I expected something.....well....better!
