Help with a quick fact check? re: "Miserable Failure" |
|
Hey folks; I'm reviewing pages for this Poli Sci book I'm managing, and I've got a quick question. One of the photo captions attributes the "miserable failure" meme to Daschile. I thought it had originated with Gephardt. Can a brilliant DU'er point me to the source, or at least give me their opinion :-) ?

1. I'd be stunned if it were Daschle |
|
I've always heard it associated with Gep.

what I thought. I mean, I'm not the author of course, but folks do get things wrong. I swore that I'd make every Poli Sci and History book that I worked on as accurate as possible, and dammit! this is the caraway seed under my bridgework.

(by the way, you can find your own sources by going to www.google.com and typing in (quotes and all)
"dick gephardt" "miserable failure" quote
Anyway sorry about the 404 on the Atlantic article. Here's a snip of what it says:
Politics & Prose | by Jack Beatty
"A Miserable Failure"
Will Bush be re-elected? Only if voters wittingly ignore his long list of failures while in office .....
With one phrase Dick Gephardt has defined the issue to be decided next November. Can a "miserable failure" of a president win re-election? Bush's victory would testify to a civic failure more dangerous to the American future than any policies implemented or continued during a second Bush term. A majority would have demonstrated that democratic accountability is finished. That you can fail in everything and still be re-elected president.
. . .

I know all about Google, but I thought instead I'd engage with some folks, rather than a search engine. I appreciate your reply! :-)

Well, within the context of the photo caption, it seems the author is attributing "miserable failure" to Daschle, rather than "he failed miserably," so I'll have to clarify with the author exactly what is intended. Many thanks!!
