I have a deep, deep dark secret to confess...
Edited on Wed Jul-28-04 09:47 PM by dolo amber
And I know I'll never live it down, but it's just one of those things...it's too good not to tell on myself. :D

I'm looking into my genealogy, just for kicks, and I've discovered something. First off, my parents are both McAlisters. Well technically, my dad is McAlister, my mom is McCallister, but they're both originally from WVA, so really...

Anyway, with the genealogy...I've discovered this is apparently a long held family tradition...

I'm gonna go look up a sexy cousin or something...x(

12. I also have a deep, deep dark secret to confess...
I am actually not a McCallister with WVA.

I have a German surname and have Minnesota and Michigan roots.

I was just trying to cash in on some forbidden cousin lust. :-)

5. Honestly, we did not know about genetics and the hazards
of shallow gene pools until last century anyway.

And of course, it is still just theory, for the most part. Intermarriage has been practiced all over the world without the birth defects observed in the study.

9. I have one of those, too
Back in the late 1600's an ancestor of my father (a Harvey) and an ancestor of my mother (a Commander) hooked up. 'Ole mom would have a conniption if she knew.

She married my grandfather, and her brothers married his sisters.

Double first cousins all over the place.

14. I have a similar story
Two of my Grandfather's sisters married two of my Grandmother's brothers, so my mom has double first cousins from those unions (Double first cousins are as close genetically speaking as full siblings, interestingly enough). It sounds like inbreeding, but it's not. It's the same as if a sibling of mine married a sibling of my husband. They aren't genetically related in any way.

15. As long as their kids don't intermarry....
Then you have nothing to worry about. In my case, it was probably the reality of living in a rural area and marrying people you went to school and church with. No many moved too far from home back in the 1920's-1930's. It was a very different world.

13. Not all southerners are related
It's a myth so don't believe it.

Welcome to being related to someone from WV. It has to be a great state because Senator Byrd is from there.

over the years.
Mostly on ships, in chains.

24. Your from NY?
Edited on Thu Jul-29-04 08:03 AM by WinterStorm
I was born and raised in NY but I don't have a bias toward southerners. I have family in VA and WV and I take offense when people say that they are all related.

My ancestors didn't own slaves they were indentured slaves from Ireland!

32. Yes, I am currently living in NY, but have southern roots
all the way back to Jamestown or so.
I understand your indignation at the insinuation of inbreeding being limited to the hill and valley country of the central Eastern US highlands, which as we all know, is not completely true.
I hold no bias against anyone.
My post was meant to point out that new blood in the South did come from slave ships.
It was intended as a wise-ass remark, and I hope that is how it can stay.

29. I'm afraid George Lucas disagrees.
http://www.starwars.com/databank/organization/technounion/

One of the most powerful commerce guilds in the Republic, the Techno Union is an organization made up of major technological manufacturers. Starship, computer, weapons and droid developers banded together under the leadership of the Union to further their own business ends.
The Foreman of the Techno Union was Wat Tambor. He allied the organization to the Confederacy of Independent Systems during the start of the Clone Wars, committing the Union's vast technological resources and droid armies to the cause of the Separatists.
