7. How old is your mom?

Have faith- your mom may "mellow down" with time. My father is 57 years old. Up until a couple of years ago he was the most vile, hate-filled racist you could ever imagine. Ok, he didn't want to join the Klan or anything like that, but he was really bad, the way he talked. I let him know my extreme displeasure with it on many occasions. Then all of a sudden, I think like I said earlier it was a "mellowing with age", he became really tolerant and respectful to everybody. He doesn't use any of the "words" he used to use, his favorite neighbors are the gay couple who lives next door to him- he's always telling me what nice guys they are, how he really enjoys talking to them, etc. And the shocker of all shockers- he supported my decision last year to ask an African American friend of mine out on a date, because (in his words) it would "make me happy". So just stay strong, you never know how people can "wise-up" in their later years.

Does she say things that she thinks aren't racist, but are? Ususally I can come up with a humorous retort. My grandma, for example, refers to black people as "coloureds". I usually ask her "What colour are they". But my grandma is not an out and out racist, she just isn't up on the current pc language. Before her stroke, she got to where she'd respond to my comment "Well, then, what do the initials NAACP stand for?"
