Girl Scout Cookie Sales No Longer Illegal
Edited on Thu Jul-29-04 10:30 AM by matcom
<snip>

SPRINGDALE, Ark. -- Girl Scouts in Springdale don't have to worry anymore about breaking the law. This week, a new city ordinance takes effect, legalizing door-to-door sales.

Local Girl Scout leaders say they never realized their annual cookie drive had been illegal.

The city council legalized solicitations, with a few strings attached. Homeowners may post signs requesting not to be disturbed or sign up for a "do-not-knock" roster.

One local Girl Scout leader is pleased with the council's actions. She says people look forward to buying their Thin Mints and other cookies from neighborhood Scouts.

1. As a grandmother, I don't like the idea of sending
kids door to door. Can't the GSA find other ways to sell cookies. Sheesh!

3. Isn't it sad that parents have to worry about this?
We never thought about it when I was little - my parents let me do it alone when I was in the scouts.

4. Yes, it is.
I remember selling magazines, gift wrap and such door to door for school. I too, was a Girl Scout and went door to door but as you say those were different times.

2. I'm for banning door-to-door sales nationwide.
This includes girl scouts, salesmen, and even just political groups (Even if I'm voting for a candidate, I don't want him or her knocking on my door).

7. I remember selling cookies door to door
Now, my coworkers bring their kids order forms to work for us to order our cookies. One troop sets up in front of my grocery store, too.

It's funny-my parents refused to sell stuff for us. We were encouraged to bring the order forms to church, and were allowed to present them at my parents' parties, but we had to make the sale. Maybe it's because my dad is a small businessman and thought we should learn how it's done.
