Am I Weird? Are you Weird?
Edited on Thu Jul-29-04 10:47 AM by elfwitch
Does this make me weird or unusual?

I like:
Cars
Comic books
Sci-Fi / Fantasy movies
On-line RPG (D&D)
Action Figures
Guitars
Legos / Tinker Toys
Video Games
Trench warfare style political discussions
Beer (not piss yellow American beer, REAL beer like Guinness)

I don't like:
Shopping
Shoes
Make-up
Hair "product"
Chick flicks
Frilly things
Cooking
Cleaning
Sewing

I can:
Fix my own car (oil, brakes, belts, etc)
Build a computer
Do most small home repairs (plumbing and carpentry)

I won't/don't:
Go to baby showers
Go to bridal showers
Make goo goo faces at babies
Get excited about the new Avon catalog
Give girlie hugs and squeal
Get dressed up unless absolutely necessary
Talk about mushy "feelings"

There are many more things about me (a hetero female) that make me very unlike many of the other of my gender and orientation. Sometimes I think that maybe I was wired weird or raised by wolves without my knowledge. but then i realize that my mother and my grandmother are pretty non-traditional females as well.

Am I a freak of nature? Or is it something else?

What things are on your I like, I don't like, I can, I won't/don't LIST that make you feel a little bit or a lot bit different from your "peers"?

17. Oh, I didn't realize...
Well, with a line like that maybe I'll renounce me deviant lifestyle and embrace a life of "true womanhood".

I'll start baking.
I'll have more babies.
I'll wear full make-up and heels to make you a six course dinner.
I'll agree with every male opinion.
I'll join the Ladies Axillary of the Moose Lodge.
I'll teach Sunday school.
I'll vote Republican!

Thank You! You've saved me from a life of feminist lies and denial of my true purpose in life. To submit to the male in all ways for it was the male that was made in God's image and it is he who lets us women submit unto male authority so we may receive our true reward in heaven.

I like to look very girly on the outside, but find relating to most women (with exception most of the ones I met on DU and a few others an exception) tedious. I like politics and I'm rather nonhuggy and stand-offish with most people. I can be pretty assertive, sarcastic and blunt at times too. I like sci-fi too! I do though, like girly movies, shopping, light beer, babies, frilly things, and cooking, but dislike sports. I've even been known to be mushy on occasion, but it kind of scares me most of the time in all honesty. I can though, do all sorts of household projects and love refinishing furniture. :D

46. Woohoo!
Looks like I've found a sister. :loveya: We seem to be pretty similar, although, I hate frilly things, girly movies, shopping with other people, and think the best part of other people's babies is that they go home, eventually. ;) But yeah, my favorite pastimes are sarcasm and politics. Unfortunately, no one shares my like of politics. I could go on and on and on and on about them, but most people find them tedious, except for DU.

However, I am not the most emotional personl in the world (serious understatement) and have been called a Vulcan? by one of my friends. Whichever the logical unemotional one is in Star Trek. I haven't decided if that was a compliment or not yet.

53. The weird thing about having been so emotionally pragmatic....
I find that underneath it all I'm very emotional. Just so emotional that I don't like to unleash it all. I mean, I'm a cordial person, but more detached most of the time. Sort of paradoxical.

I wear pink though...and makeup (subtle as tasteful of course)...and my hair is long. Right now, I have on a pink shirt and pink and red flowered mini skirt. I like being a Femmey Feminist. :D

Nothing to prove, it's just me! :7

:D But really, when I was a kid, I was so emotional. I would cry because someone else cried; overdeveloped empathy I guess. And people would look at me cross-eyed like I had a problem.

I hate pink with a passion and I'm pissed that I can't find that much stuff without it. Conversely, I look very good in pink, so I'm encouraged to wear it. :eyes: I go through stages with makeup; I like it to dress up, not to wear everyday, mostly cuz I forget to put it on. I just like to look nice, unless it's one of those days. Then I couldn't care less, as long as I won't get arrested for it. :D

84. I'm a Cancer too
and I do like to cook sometimes and I do like shopping for funky clothes. But I am not at all domestic. I am a good mommy, but I am a feminist, old school punk drummer, former nerd, boho, bookish, do tai chi, prof. woman, and have always been more like one of the guys. I prefer black clothes, but I like purple too. But pink, just not me. And I too managed to find a progressive guy who likes me just the way I am.

Hence, Elfwitch, you are not alone in your "weirdness," also known as normalcy! :yourock:

26. I've told people I was raised by wolves.
I was much closer to the men in my family -- both in age and in most other ways -- than I was to the women. I had two older cousins who used to work on cars, and by the time I was ten years old I knew the difference between a crescent wrench and a pipe wrench, and that Lowell George used a Craftsman 9/16" socket to play slide guitar. For a long time, I thought they ruined me because when I was a teenager, guys all wanted to be my buddy. I realize at this late remove that was partly because that was the way I dealt with guys, but I didn't get it then.

The best part about being different is that when you do find men who understand and can deal with you, it's usually a more equal and honest relationship than if you were pretending to be 'girly.' I don't mean to say that women who are genuinely 'girly' don't have honest relationships with the men who like that about them -- just that those of us who try to fake it make trouble for ourselves faking it.

Mr. Nownow and I are very much alike about many things. He likes to watch sports once in a while, and I seldom do, but we both like to build things, work on the cars, cook, shop for groceries. He actually is more of a clothes horse and enjoys that kind of shopping more than I do. But I have more shoes (probably because I hate shopping, so I tend to make judgments on shoes much too quickly).

36. Sure. But why do I really dislike that friggin term "metrosexual"?
Because it's a media creation, I guess. It's not un-clever, but this need to label everything and everyone rubs me the wrong way. I had the same reaction to "Generation X" when it was foisted upon me and my peeps. And don't even get me started on "alternative music." Etc. Hell, you know what I'm talking about. I've been backing steadily away from my orginal profession---a journalist covering "pop culture" (another term I loathe)---because it really is too much about labelling and piegonholing for easy consumption by people who need their culture and their philosophy pre-chewed.

Not a rant directed at you, terrya. Not at all. You're the hippest, as Jerry would say. It's just that it's Thursday, so it's "ranting day" here at Westegg World Headquarters.

But I'd put him up against damn near anybody and not fear for his safety. He also (pre-Aikido) did about 5 other martial arts including Wing Chun. He is big but very fast!

When my big man bear is around I worry not in the slightest about my safety. When he was a kid, other kids would pay him to beat the crap out of people who were picking on them. He went to Jr high as a rich kid school and the little WASPy punks always picked on the Jewish kids that went there.

He'd normally get about $50 per "hit" if you will. It paid for his comic books.

51. Mmm. Maybe. I was born and raised in Texas. Long before
B*sh befouled an already foul state, I took a vow never to go back. Maybe if things change. Good Texans like you and the other Lone Star DU-er's will effect change for the better. End of polemic.

Care for another beer? :D :beer:

38. Sounds pretty non-freaky to me
I cook and bake. I can do minor repairs to clothing (I lack a sewing machine for major repairs). I know everything there is to know about cleaning (well, no, not really, but it's what I write about for a living). I wear skirts and dresses more often than pants -- more due to fit than anything (I'm 5'2" and my legs are even shorter, proportionally), but they're not lacy/frilly/pink.

I don't enjoy bridal showers, but I go if I have to. (It's the games -- I'm OK with the "sitting around drinking wine" part.) I wear minimal makeup if I have to, none if I don't. I don't squeal either. My hair is washed and combed and that's about it. I look horrible in pastels. I don't own a single pair of shoes that cost more than $30. I traded in all of the Bath & Body Works bath bubbles, body spray and scented oils I received for Christmas/Hanukkah last year for hand soap, lip balm and tea.

I can do many small home repairs as well (plumbing, masonry). I like the hardware store. I read and watch lots of sci-fi. I installed broadband and set up the network here myself. I got into a 30-minute argument with a self-proclaimed fundamentalist preacher about abortion and school vouchers at a fair last week. I can hold my own in a discussion about the in-field fly rule or the designated hitter (although I'm not into sports). I taught myself HTML, out of a book, because the editor that came with Geocities sucked so badly I decided to build a site from scratch. I am capable of nerding up just about anything.

39. not weird, VERY cool!
Edited on Thu Jul-29-04 11:41 AM by jukes
excellent list.

my girlieman cat love is often horrifying to males; it frequently evokes crass "meat" comments, & i have difficulty not invoking "badagris" in response.

i've been a psychological vegetarian for 35 some years, just can't tolerate the thought of eating flesh.

i'm an excellent cook, gourmet quality. mostly italian, but also specialize in soups. i even cook flesh!

i enjoy chemical usage, but can't tolerate alcohol, either it's taste or effex (do miss margaritas someXs, but prudence prevails, i'm an asshole drunk!)

i sing to my cats, even @ the vets.

not all liberals are pacifists, much to the chagrin of the butch-male fundies on my street. they avoid me, but practice "secret" harassment.

i don't hate chickflix, & love independant films.

i can openly admit that j. depp & george clooney are sexy mofos, even though i'm straight.

i was once in a knife fight; have a slash across all four fingers of my left hand (mist the block, thawt he'd severed tendons) and a stab scar on my left ribcage (only amateurs "stab"). he'll think of me everytime he shaves for the rest of his life! (oh, i won.)

i have a love of cemeteries, & someXs go to one to meditate.

i once fasted for three days, & met my totem. (even though i'm an atheist, go figure)

guess that's enough boring b/s for the nonce.

EDIT: i'm a bit of a braggart, i guess, but that HARDLY sets me apart from most males.

get a bash right back from me. Texas has a lot of problems. but what state doesn't?

I am proud (in spite of all that has happened) of my Texican birth. But then as I've said many times, South Texas and North Texas are like two completely different places. If I had been raised in North Texas, I might not feel the same way.

76. Not you're not wierd
just not traditionally feminine in a lot of ways. I'm like that too.

Here's My lists:

I like

Comics
Electronic gadgets
phones
PDAs
all kinds of entertainment equip
Tools
Political debates
A good shot of whiskey
Living in the country
living without pantyhose
Action/Sci Fi Movies
Clothes that make me feel comfortable
Doing artistic things like painting

I don't like:
Frilly lacy clothes
Frilly lacy decor
Pantyhose
Give girly hugs and squeal.
Get excited about the new Avon catelogue
Sitting around emoting about my feelings.
Expectations that I be more of the above. :grr:

I can:
Batten down the house to survive a hurricane and other emergencies.
Paint a room
Change a tire
put together assembly-required furniture

My demeanor can be described as aloof if I don't know you well. But all that is earased over a cup of coffee.

80. Wow you sound just like me
Except I don't own a car, and I sew because I'm into Renaissance and Victorian-era clothes and they cost a fortune (dressing like a weirdo costs money). I am also into cosplay, which demands an ability to sew. I can't stand beer, but I like a good tall glass of mead.

Then again I'm not hetero, I'm bi. Another thing that makes me "weird" I guess.

I also hate hip hop and rap music (though I did enjoy the Black Eyed Peas last night at the convention), which is a crime tantamount to treason if you're black. My favorite genre is goth/darkwave. Also, a lot of the music I own is in languages I somewhat understand (Japanese), or not at all (Hindi, German, Mandarin/Cantonese, etc). I am into the goth scene so I like makeup, just not the kind most women wear. :P

I am really so far from mainstream it's almost funny. I've always been weird, and a huge nerd, and I learned to stop fighting it a long time ago. Life is much happier that way. :)

82. those are all superficial definitions of femininity anyway.
Here's the real test:

Do you expect your partner to read your mind, then get mad when he doesn't, then when he asks why you're mad you say "If you really loved me you wouldn't have to ask?"

If no, then you are, in fact, weird.

;)

87. Damn! Damn! And Damn again!
Damn, damn damn! I leave North Texas because there's no liberal females there and and soon as I relocate, what do see...? Elfwitch is from Dallas (not as cool as Fort Worth, but still a definite high on the cool scale) and now I'm 1500 miles away.

Curious... what D&D PC RPG do you play? My pals and I do the NeverWinter Nights thing every other weekend... :hi:

88. Not FROM Dallas
FROM San Antonio.

Hubby and I used to run a game on-line called Elsewhere. If was 3rd ed. D&D. Kinda Old West meets Steam-punk. Very cool. Lotsa fun.

Got too time consuming and then we had our son come along. No time for much else now.

I got up to 9th level Elf Sorceress in about a year and a half playing this one game on-line.

San Antonio...ahh, much better. I was being polite in my first post. I think Dallasites are a bunch of self-serving, sanctimonious snobs with nothing to show for themselves but a tired, twenty-year old prim-time drama. (runs and hides from Dallas area DU'ers)

Was the game you and hubby ran developed by yourselves? I've never heard of it....

92. Yep.
It was a die-20 game based mostly on 3rd edition D&D rules. He added a few extras, but for the most part it was 3rd edition.

Some of the characters on our website were from the game.

I don't like Dallas either. I completely agree with you r assessment of the average Dallas-ite.

95. Your "don't like" list is much like mine
except I enjoy cooking as long as I don't have to clean up. And I do wear make-up. Not a lot but a bit.

On this part we totally agree:

I won't/don't:
Go to baby showers (if I can avoid it without being rude)
Go to bridal showers (if I can avoid it without being rude)
Make goo goo faces at babies
Get excited about the new Avon catalog
Give girlie hugs and squeal
Get dressed up unless absolutely necessary
Talk about mushy "feelings"

Though I don't go ga ga for babies, if I see a dog, forget it! I tend to go overboard.

I enjoy a lot of things that aren't stereotypically female. I started very young by taking Shop instead of Home Ec. and pretty much continued from there. I still can't sew but I've gotten pretty good at faking it (I can sew on a button if I HAVE to). :-)
