Django fans? I saw some GREAT guitar playing last night...
At Lincoln Center's Alice Tully Hall. The concert was titled "The Spirit of Django Reinhardt" and the musicians were: Stochelo Rosenberg and Dorado Schmitt, lead guitar; Roby Lakatos, violin; Ludovic Beier, accordion; Samson Schmitt, rythm guitar; Brian Torff, bass.

Anyone else see this show by chance? I'm still high from it. Absolutely stunning playing from all. I mean, I know Django's music somewhat, and have a couple albums, but nothing prepared me for the brilliance of these masterful musicians, from France, America, Hungary, the Netherlands.... Wish I had the words to convey all that I heard. I'd LOVE to hear comments from those who know these musicians better than I do. For me, it was a transformative experience.

23. Birelli is also a Gypsy from france
He put out his first album when he was something like 11 years old. sounded a lot like Django. Child prodigy. Then the producers at Blue Note got a hold of him and he put out a couple of terrible, overly produced pieces of dreck. But he finally wised up and got back to his roots. He has a recent album called something like "The Django Project" which I think you'd enjoy.

Jukes, I can't even tell ya! It was Magical, and believe me...
...I use that word sparingly, as it has real meaning. Yep, I need to get some more of this hot shit. "Sweet/Lowdown" was a nice and soulful (and funny-as-hell) portrait of the music and of the time. Thanx Woody. And yeah, Depp is indeed a Django fan and an activist. Depp's a first-class cat in my book.

I don't know you, but I can tell you would have dug this show the most. Nice to hear from you.

32. Django is one of my favorite musician's ,his phrasing was so soulful
it sound like you got to forget about current affairs for a while, and revel in one of the greatest contributions humans have given to humanity MUSIC IS BEST(and JAZZ is better!).Speaking of Django type music I must highly (HIGHLY!!)recommend the Marc Atkinson Trio from Victoria BC Canada ,I had the pleasure to attend the Jazz program at Malaspina College with him in 85, He blew me away then, and blew me away even more when I heard the trio a couple years ago.I think that Marc is the premier jazz artist to come out of the Malasina Jazz program(and Diana Krall went there.):nopity: :hi:

Maybe I'll see you and the future MRs. CStheT there...!

13. I was turned on to Gypsy Jazz by a fiddler I once knew.
And by Uncle Walt's Band--a band from North Carolina who played in Texas back in the 70's. They played many styles--& it was criminal that they didn't become huge stars--& their "swing" was a bit different from our Western Swing. (Hey, even Jerry Jeff Walker named his son Django.)

Sounds like an excellent show. Thanks for the artists' names--off to Amazon to see what CD's are available.

I did get to see Stephan Grapelli play once.

26. Thanks. & they were from South Carolina, not North Carolina.
As the article mentions, Lyle Lovett was a big fan. He had lots to do with the reissues of their music on CD. They were even better live, but the recordings are all we've got.

His 2-CD set Step Inside this House was devoted to tunes by the songwriters he'd admired in his youth. One whole disk was devoted to Walter Hyatt & Townes van Zandt--their very different styles influenced him heavily. On a practical note, the royalties helped out their survivors.

He even put a verse about the band in "That's Right, You're Not From Texas". But it's not a rude song--the next line is "but Texas wants you anyway".

25. Paco De Lucia, Al Di Meola & John McLaughlin
I had a tape of those three playing abck in the 80's. Unfortunately, I lent it to someone and never got it back. A little more modern that Django, but great acoustical jazz.

I love Django... but not familiar with the other musicians you mentioned.

I love these threads... always good tips on artists to check out. Anyone here familiar with Ottmar Liebert? I like him but don't know if he's respected or thought of as talented or anything. :)
