New Radio Station: JACK FM - "playing what we want"
It looks like it is a launch in several different markets. It just started up in Dallas. It is HELLA cool. If it came to your city, check it out. If nothing else it is a nice break from the cookie cutter world of Clear Channel Hell!

1. We've had that in Calgary and Vancouver for over a year.
I just assumed it was a Western Canadian thing.

3. It's been kicking ass in the Vancouver Market
Even shut down one of the local shit alternative stations and forced the other to alter its format, now it is the number two station in town next to the big talk station.

5. We got it here in Ottawa, too.
It's a division of Shaw communications, isn't it?

7. There's now one in Chicago too.
It's called "The Nine" because it's 99.9FM

The other day I heard Van Halen, then Cat Stevens, then the Beasties.

11. It's just like WXRT. Except that 'The 9' plays more suck.
Seriously...hasn't 'XRT been doing the same thing for the last 30 years? Except with much better taste in music?

8. New one in Atlanta too.
"Dave FM".

It's called "neo-radio" - a modified throwback to the free-form FM formats of the 60s and 70s.

Godspeed, I say. Radio has been narrowcasting instead of broadcasting long enough.

13. I've had the DAMNDEST time figuring it out too
I am in the Dallas market and I didn't know WHAT the hell was going on.

I mean, one minute they are playing Journey, then Usher, then Tori Amos, then ELO.

Whew. Multiple personality disorder radio. I like it, I just need some time to get adjusted from extreme programming strictness radio world.

It's like a random pull out of a grab bag when you turn to it.

15. Ugh...Vancouver's most listenable radio station, but not very interesting.
We've had it up here for a long time. It's a mix of classic rock and some more modern stuff, nothing that most people haven't heard a million times before...For a city with such a reputation for being progressive and modern, Vancouver radio blows.

That having been said, the one good thing about JACK FM is that I get to hear obscure Canadian pop music that I was never exposed to in the states. Kim Mitchell, Trooper, etc.
