My SO rocks!
He's been helping an older gentleman, that is homeless and lives in the woods, for about a year now. It took a lot of effort but he finally got his SS started about 2 months ago. Well yesterday, he received his first check but they couldn't find anyone to cash it because the guy's ID is expired. The state won't renew his ID because he has lost his SS card. It's just one small hurdle after another that makes it difficult for a homeless person to help themselves.

He just called to tell me that he contacted a bank manager that we used to deal with in a small town about 15 miles away, and she told him to bring the guy over and she would set up direct deposit for him. I'm just so proud of E that I could spit.

It goes to show that there may be help available to some of the folks that we see living on the streets, but they need help in getting it. This poor guy didn't even know where to begin.

This cantankerous old geezer rarely posts anything uplifting and I wanted to share this. :)

1. Give him
a big hug from me. This is what life is all about IMO. Great to help, a great feeling when it works and someones life is so much better than before. Man, he is a real hero in my eyes.

3. Hey, us COGs* gotta stick together.
And thanks for a new whatever-you-call-it.
"COGs"
Cantankerous Old Geezers

A couple of times in my life I've had the opportunity to make a difference in someone's life. It's a rare, never-to-be-forgotten experience, second only to seeing my daughter come into the world.

Bless you both.
:-)

5. Gotta ask
what is the criteria for being a COG? My kids called me geezer the other day. They were kidding of course (hahaha).

7. 60+, IMHO.
On the other hand, Geezer is as Geezer does.
;-)
I've known some 30 year old Geezers and some 70 year old kids.
I fall more into the latter category (63), but claim Geezerhood whenever it benefits my particular situation.

9. Thanks trof.
I guess at 50 I might be pregeezing then. OK I have about 10 years, give or take, to get the geeze going. :hi:

10. I still consider myself a geezer...
but I'm much, much, much, much younger. }( }( }(

I fluctuate my own description between old geezer, old fart and another unmentionable depending on the situation. :)

4. wow, this is how we change the world. One person at a time
if you think of all the troubles in the world you can get paralyzed with the magnitude of the issues.

But if each one of us took on one little local problem, it would be a miracle every day

Kudos to your SO for hanging in there and keeping up the fight

:bounce:

6. I just got done
watching a Kucinich video and this is exactly what he was talking about with his Department of Peace. Starting with one person at a time. Interesting timing.

8. You know Muse, it's just amazing that there are still folks...
living in cardboard boxes on the streets and in the woods in this day and age. There are some safety nets out there but without transportation, phones or computers too many can't even get the help that is there for them. I hope that Dennis addressed that aspect in his proposal. BTW is there a link to the video?

11. Here.
This is for windows broadband. http://resources.kucinich.us/video/video/boston/7_25_04/video/win_broadband.wmv

If this does not work go to www. kucinich.net to this:
Peace takes center stage at Boston Social Forum

It is about the 11th story on the page. It does not get this specific but if you investigate the site you can probably find more.

Without transportation or an address these days I can't imagine how anyone gets along. It is up to all of us with the capacity to share to do so. Without folks like your SO so many more would die and just be lost out there. One at a time.
