DU Drummers: Does anyone understand the "Moeller Technique"?
I've been trying to find information on the "Moeller Technique" of playing drums.

First, I went to http://www.vicfirth.com and checked out the two cyberlessons on it. From what I can tell from Jim Chapin's little talks, it appears to be not much more than a very loose grip on the stick so it will move freely in the hand.

That can't be all there is to it.

Or is it?

Jim Chapin's website is no help--he is, understandably, trying to sell people copies of his "Advanced Techniques for the Modern Drummer."

I can't find "The Moeller Book" by Sanford Moeller. And yes, I've been looking.

And nowhere else on the web do they show this in use.

sometimes you have and develop technique if you play long enough, without realizing that you have it. Flexible and relaxed wrists are good!

2. Here you go:
To order the Moeller Book go here.

For related videos, check out:

Jim Chapin - "Speed, Power, Control, Endurance"
Joe Morello - "The Natural Approach To Technique"

Both are good sources about the technique. In a nutshell, Moeller has broken drum strokes into four basic types: Full, Down, Tap, & Up. Hard to explain in writing... He was going for ergonomic movement of the arms, wrists and fingers as well as the natural rebound of the stick itself.

I suggest taking a few lessons with a college drum instructor for a little more guidance, though.

I've heard of it...
...I think Dave Weckl uses it

Apperently its a different method for doing diddles. And very fast rolls

4. I've noticed you can get very fast stick motion out of it
Which is what makes it so interesting to me.

5. Yeah...it sounds awesome...
...when I was in drumline they made us train very conservatively (boring...)...so it would probably be a very awkward technique at first....but definitely worth looking into.

8. Of Course. It's Two Diddles
One is a diddle, and two of them are a paradiddle. Sort of like your username. You are 2 "gons", but you forgot the "s".

11. nope.
A paradiddle is two taps and a diddle...like this... RLRR or LRLL

A double paradiddle would be this... RLRRLL LRLLRR and so on and so forth

13. I've been awake for 24 hours.
My joke circuits have been deactivated. I barely get it even with the explanation. You have to bare with me.

DOH!

14. No Problem
It was just a stupid joke. Just amusing myself, i guess.

Sorry, to have semi-hijacked the drummer thread.

I have friends who are drummers, but i'm no drummer. Should have kept my nose out of it.

10. paradiddles are a lot of work
but they sound really cool when you master them. I can do some informally, but I need a lot of practice. There are many, many types of paradiddles.
