Boy Impaled By Arrow While Hunting With Father

WEST MELBOURNE, Fla. -- An arrow impaled a seven-year-old boy through his neck Friday afternoon and his family had no choice but to drive nearly 30 miles until they found help. The accident happened at Deer Park on the Osceola-Brevard County line.

The boy accidentally fell on the arrow, impaling himself. Rescue crews say it went in on the left side of his neck and out through the back of his neck. He's currently listed in serious condition.

The boy was airlifted from a fire station in West Melbourne with most of the arrow still stuck in his neck. Rescue crews, though, say he was alert and could move his arms and legs, which are good signs.

The boy was apparently hunting with his father in Deer Park, a few miles west of the Brevard-Osceola County line, when the boy fell on the arrow. His father decided to try and drive him to help. He called a friend, a fire chief, who directed him to a Brevard County fire station where they were able to work on him.

Rescue crews say the arrow just missed the jugular, which meant the difference between life and death.
