A good name for a new puppy? |
|
Can anyone think of a good name for my new male Golden Retriever puppy? I just got him last night and he's 10 weeks old, so beautiful.
I want to name him soon so he can learn to come when I call him. I live on a large farm and have always had a dog before.

I dunno, it was the first thing that came to mind! I've never named animals by "animal" names (that wouldn't be used on a human), they are a member of my family and they get a real name. :)

8. I name my chickens after my mother's elderly cousins |

and the names are so cool. Imagine having a flock of hens named Gladys, Lucille, Mildred, Pearl, Kate, Myrtle, but then you may not have redneck relatives like me. Sound like a group of B B King's guitars.

why? I dunno- mostly just like the sound of it. It's solid, easy, and friendly.
Whatever you decide, yell it a few times. It will help you decide if you can live with it.
Can't tell you how completely silly I felt when my grandson's dog got out a couple of weeks ago. We spread out over the neighborhood calling his name block by block. Eventually he came running - soaking wet after a dip in the pond - so there was a happy ending.
Can just imagine someone looking out their window and shaking their head in disbelief - "there's some loony walking down the street wearing an 'I Need a Nap' t-shirt, jammy bottoms that have 'I see dumb people' written all over them, and neon pink and lime green slippersocks yelling 'BINGO!' Quick, grab a net while I call the guys in the white coats."

Like that kid in the Jungle Book, but you can call him Moe for short...awww, Mowgli....
But, when I get a dog, I'm naming him Bono--but that's due to my unnatural fascination with Bono the guy, LOL.

Think about how you feel around the puppy or look for character/personality traits.
Roscoe, Rex, Fido, Oro, Rey, Apollo.... just off the top of my head.
Congratulations. Hope you both will have many years of companionship!

what should I use to make him understand that I'm talking to him, that I want him to come, etc? I don't want to confuse him later.
My last two Goldens were given to me after they were mostly grown up and had too many "tickets" in town for running loose. They loved it here and were easy to train.
I haven't raised a "puppy" in 30 years and my Dr. won't give me Valium anymore:)

20. You can use more than one name. |
|
Each of my cats has a name and a nickname or two. Something generic like Puppy is fine. At times I've tried to give cats certain names that I thought were great -- but they just didn't stick and after several weeks of calling the critter by that name, stumbled upon a name that did work. (Tabitha became Snickers, Harry was really Ricky, etc.)
Naming is serious business -- don't rush it. The Puppy doesn't care about names -- just food, play time, attention, cuddling, running, pooping, etc. Give it some time.

There's a bizarre tradition on my mom's side of the family where almost every dog they get ends up being named "Puppy". They get the dogs, and they can never agree on a name, so meanwhile they just call it Puppy. Eventually they just give up and the name is stuck. Between my grandparents and aunts and uncles, I can think of at least six dogs they have had over the years named Puppy.

23. I would name the dog after his personality traits. |
|
If he is mellow, give him a mellow name. If he's hyper, name him Peppy or something.
My friend had a cat who continuously hit his head on the furniture, so they named him Headly.
Two of my cats are named after goddesses, Kali Ma, the mean one who doesn't like men, and Kuan Yin, who is sweet as molasses and is gentle with children. Then we have Susu, who is all white, with one blue eye and one green eye. Her name means "milk" in Indonesian, so that my dearly departed mother in law could understand her name. If I could re-name her it would have something to do with being the neighborhood sweetheart. Everyone wants to steal her.
I've always thought "Fletch" was a great name for a dog, especially if he likes to go after criminals.
