Last night in his acceptance speech John Kerry reclaimed our flag
saying "That flag doesn't belong to any president. It doesn't belong to any ideology and it doesn't belong to any political party. It belongs to all the American people."

As a result, on every flag he encounters until November 2nd, George Bush is laboriously copying in his childish scrawl the flowery "GWB" with which Babs used to inscribe his underwear and mittens.

1. Need to check on it, but thought writing on a flag was defacing it.
And while burning a flag is legal and one way to dispose of a soiled or damaged flag with dignity, writing on it is defacing it.

It's OUR flag and I want that AWOL chicken hawk to stop scrawling on it!

2. No need, I remember my cub scout days

and one cannot deface the flag with anything, no writing, no
extra symbols, fringe (only gold) is OK.

And for the freeper idiots that tie flags to their pickemup
trucks... It is NOT OK to display a flag that has become torn
or tattered. Such flags must be disposed of in the approved
manner. Flags should not fly after dark without having the
proper illumination. Flags should not be left out in the rain.

3. My daughter goes balistic when she sees a soiled, tattered flag on a
vechile! There will be a time when she can no longer surpress the urge to get out of her car and remove one from an offending idiot at a stop light.

Thanks for the confirmation. My 'cub scout days' are back so far in the mists of time that I can not even remember them. Wait, I was a girl, that might explain why it is so damned hard to remember...

4. My cub scout days are very long ago

but it's amazing what I can remember. The flag thing, especially
from those who like to wrap themselves in a flag, and *hate*
people that burn flags in protest, just irks me to no end. I want
them to pass a "defense of flag" act that makes a crime to not
treat the flag like you were taught in scouting. Then I would spend
my day just roaming around and finding freepers and calling the
police to make an arrest!

No, not really, I thing the right to burn the flag is too precious
(it's what make THIS flag special to me). But I have my dreams.,\

8. Gray tattered flag screams "Repug Freeper" to me.
Seeing those and to have such a person, who is desecrating the flag, question MY ptriotism?

I'm glad Kerry publicly acknowledged the anger many of us have felt.

5. Proud Flag flyer here.
Awhile back I grew tired of having it stolen from me.

I resented it.

Finally the resentment built to a point of fight back.

And we take it in at dusk and don't let rain hit it. (if possible)

another of my pet peeves is when people are so proud of their patriotism that they can't be bothered with bringing the flag in or turning a light on it.

My older brother put up a pole and raised the flag each morning at dawn. My younger brother and I would bring the flag down each night, and fold it proberly while the older brother piped it down on his old boatswain's pipe. We even had the kids in the hood stopping and standing for it most evenings in the summertime.

I love the song Don't Put It Downby Ragni, Rado & MacDermot, I believe, from the play Hair

Don't Put it Down

Om mane padme om
On mane padme om
Folding the flag means taking care of the nation.
Folding the flag is putting it to bed for the night.
I fell through a hole in the flag
I'm falling through a hole in the flag
Help!

Don't put it down
Best one around
Crazy for the red blue and white
Crazy for the red blue and white

You look at me
What do you see
Crazy for the white red and blue
Crazy for the white red and blue

Cause I look different
You think I'm subversive
Crazy for the blue white and red
Crazy for the blue white and red

My heart beats true
For the red white and blue
Crazy for the blue white and red
Crazy for the blue white and red
And yellow fringe
Crazy for the blue white red and yellow

9. "Don't let the sun go down on me..."
Okay maybe that's goofy...and too pop culture. Put it's what kicks into the brain when the shadows grow extra long.

Time to take the flag in.

7. Bill Moyers on the Flag:
"...So what's this doing here? Well, I put it on to take it back. The flag's been hijacked and turned into a logo — the trademark of a monopoly on patriotism. On those Sunday morning talk shows, official chests appear adorned with the flag as if it is the good housekeeping seal of approval. During the State of the Union, did you notice Bush and Cheney wearing the flag? How come? No administration's patriotism is ever in doubt, only its policies. And the flag bestows no immunity from error. When I see flags sprouting on official lapels, I think of the time in China when I saw Mao's little red book on every official's desk, omnipresent and unread..."
