3. My two favorites aren't there |
|
:-(
"How Can You Mend A Broken Heart" and "Take Me To The River."
Not that I've heard his entire catalog, or even much of it at all. Great voice and 'feel,' though.

Due to the limited number of choices I can post to a poll, I generally stick to an artist's highest-charted singles. And as great as "Broken Heart" and "River" are, they never made the pop top forty, if you can believe that!
Guess I should've included an "other" option. Next time, I promise!

7. Not even cracking the Top 40? That's a tad strange, really. |
|
But that sort of thing's happened a lot in popular music.
I just voted for "Let's Stay Together," anyway. :-)

10. Actually, I remember hearing the THeads version debut on AT40 |
|
Hard to believe Al's original didn't make it. Maybe it wasn't released as a single. It was Talking Heads' first appearance on the countdown, a surreal conjunction between art school rock and Casey Kasem.

12. I agree with you; those are my two favorites as well. |
|
I remember constantly listening to "How Can You Mend a Broken Heart" my senior year in high school. (Along with Isaac Hayes' "The Look of Love.") And a number of years later, a friend's band wrote a song that mentioned Al Green singing about the river. (Before they came up with a title for it, they referred to it as 'the Al Green song'.)

13. No, Green's original was a single... |
|
...but it had the misfortune to come out at the height of the late '70s disco craze, when the fascistic thump-thump of the dance beat made it all but impossible for an emotionally nuanced vocal performance to go anywhere near the top forty. As such, one of Al Green's finest recordings crapped out at #92 on the R&B chart and missed the Hot 100 altogether! What a pity....
