15. Jefferson Davis
Edited on Fri Jul-30-04 11:11 PM by freedomfrog
Naw, not really. My vote goes to General George Thomas of Virginia, who remained loyal to the Union when the Civil War came. He saved the Federal army from disaster at the battle of Chickamauga and nearly annihilated a Confederate army at Nashville in 1864. Unfortunately for his place in history he was a painfully modest, unassuming man and never got proper credit for his accomplishments. Grant was actually planning to remove him from command on the eve of his great victory at Nashville.

On edit: Jefferson Davis was infinitely more intelligent and honorable than George Bush or any other living Conservative I can think of, and he took his duty as a public official very seriously. I think it would be wonderful if we could bring him back from the dead to replace Trent Lott. They stand for about the same thing, but at least Jeff. Davis had class. And good hair.
