3. I'm interested in how firm those system requirements are
I'm still getting by with a Geforce 2 video card so I suppose I'm flat out of luck.

I ran Call of Duty quite well with it though so maybe I could skimp by with all of the graphics settings turned down?

Anyone running it with substandard specs?

4. Well, my experience...
I have 3Ghz, 1GB ram, 128MB Ati-9800

with that setup I can play very smooth on medium - 800x600 (there is low medium high ultra) however high - 800x600 gets a little fuzzy - but I did have appl running in the background whilst doing this (firewalls norton p2p aim)

640x480 is suprisingly good quality.

I can play COD with most of the bells and whistles and high res, but I have to play my games low res bc of mouse sensitivity.

6. It IS DAMN good...
I havent had a game that you actually feel scared to walk down the next corridor as though your ass was really on the line. Its dark, so hald the places you go youll need a flashlight, but you cant have a gun. So, you end up shining your light on god knows what, you whip out your gun and open fire in complete dark. Panic sets in.

It will make you scream, and you will feel cold chills and goosebumps.

13. What do you mean "They may start work on 3"??????
TELL ME MORE!!!

Seriously, System Shock 2 is one of my all time favorites. (Even scarier than Doom 3)

Babies must sleep. Babies must rest. Sleep...

11. Its great! Scary and fun..But needs a high end system
My g-force 2 is streched to the limit with bits of lag and chop
At some points in the game scared the pants out of me and I scremed " JESUS" at one point

12. 200 plus years in the future...
And there's not a SINGLE ROLL OF DUCT TAPE ON MARS BASE!!!
Yes, I understand. It's dark. It's hell. It's spooooooky. But for crying out loud, it gets really old to have to switch between your flashlight and your weapon.

While the game is graphically stunning, and the lighting effects are marevelous, I feel like I'm walking through a carinval haunted house, with lots of "gotcha!" scenes, like imps stepping out from behind wall panels that drop.
I know, the original game did that, too, but there's a reason it worked 10 years ago. The realm of first person shooters was rather new to computer gamers, and they could get away with pretty much anything they wanted to. I'd rather have a little bit more sophistication to my game now, not just an amazing graphics engine. (did I mention yet that the graphics were amazing?)
The really good news is that id is still supporting the modding community, as there's an option to activate user-created mods on the main menu screen. So there's going to be a lot of people changing the game around.

In conclusion, while the whole "flashlight-or-weapon" thing is annoying, the game is goregous, and the sound is magnificent. I'd still suggest buying it, waiting until dark, locking the door, turning off the light, and descending into hell.

Now I just gotta wait for Half-Life 2. (Next month)

14. Was ANY of it made outside the US? It's odd that
more and more work for games and applications and operating systems are being made outside the US, yet the PRICES for them still go UP?

Don't the supporters of this outsourcing bullshit say it's a cost savings thing? Where's the cost savings to we consumers in an economy that's not being hit by inflation, don't mind me if I have to buy FOOD instead. x(

15. interesting question
While I somewhat question the "US only" line (well, what can I say?), it is an interesting question: So far the id games were retail tech-demos for Carmacks's engines with little game content (OK; they WERE scary).
I can't believe that the Doom3 engine was made by one man alone, but I don't think that id hired labor abroad - Carmack might be one of the worst bosses ever, but considering his anti-patents standpoint, I don't think he would do that.

Anyway, I won't check Doom3 until there is a free demo, and even then: maybe next year ;-) .
