My husband is at his first Second City comedy writing class
That's it, really. I just think it's cool, and I've already told all of our friends and family, so I felt like telling more people :)

Perhaps he's channeling his own inner Stephen Colbert at this moment.

He and I both love to write, so he's taking the class, and I'm going to make him use some of my ideas ;)

3. That's cool, indeed
I think our very own mkuhl runs one such class himself.

Writing comedy and/or humor is very challenging and very rewarding. I tend to write humor -- the literary-style ha-ha -- but I've written skits and stand-up in my day, which began around 1977.

It also gave me a much better appreciation for how hard it is to write comedy -- and made the truly bad comedians seem all that much worse.

Of course, I never did too well at it, but I've gotten more out of it than any other kind of writing I've ever done.

So, three cheers to your husband -- and hoist a few to Second City, while you're at it.

8. SC Chicago has an impressive alumni...
Their alum lists reads like a laundry list of some of my favorite performers and comedians.
I tend to write humor-tinged, semi-autobiographical short stories myself, so I love to see humor in writing. Adam (my hubs) is good with envisioning sketches in his head, so this should be a good fit for him. I think I'm more excited than he is :)

12. Is that where you are, Chicago?
He should get in touch with mkuhl then and both of you should come to our next gathering. Lots of cool DUers in Chicago. :hi:

14. Most definitely...
He's been lurking on DU - I think he may have signed up recently, but I forget his DU name :)
Anyway, we'll have to make an upcoming Chicago gathering.

13. Not even a Second City ramblin', shamblin' man
Does he have much experience in comedy and/or writing? I have very little, but I did some stand-up in the late '70s. I'd also like to take courses, but my life is in a bit of a bind lately (illness in the family). I'm also actively writing on two projects, so I'll probably be taking coursework after I've taken my next first step.

I live in Philadelphia. There is almost no comedy here except for ComedySportz and a pricy cabaret circuit of better-than-decent, but sadly-stalled, stand-up comedians. However, some of the younguns are trying to get an improv scene going and bringing some of the NYC trainers down to workshop -- Armando Diaz, and the Upright Citizens crew, are the most frequently mentioned and wish-listed.

Alas, it just plain sucks not being rich enough to anonymously throw money around. So much talent, so little support! (And I don't mean that to apply to me, either.)

Oh, by the way, Adam is probably more excited than you know. If he's good at in-skull work, he's probably in some kind of a trance several hours a day by now. Writing is usually like that.

15. He has not got professional experience...
He and I would often shout out premises as we saw them, though he is much quicker than I in seeing a sketch materialize out of something we have just witnessed. I tend to be the observer of something and point out the humor, and he tends to take that, twist it, and turn it into a premise for a skit. He's been doing this since we first got together 5 years ago, and I finally got him to go to SC by calling them and enrolling him. It was always one of those "I'll get to it one of these days" kinda things, and last week, I felt it was one of those days. :)

Since I am HORRIBLE with dialouge writing, even in short stories, my writing is much more essay pieces.... think David Sedaris. I can't seem to write any other way. I think he'll do quite well. And yeah - beneath the "first night jitters" there's gotta be a lot of excitement.

5. I saw Second City in Vegas
They were the most brillant comedians I've ever seen (except for the Daily Show). We need more laughter. I wish him well.

10. I caught them in Toronto, Chicago and Detroit...
Was impressed every time. I love improv. Chicago is actually home to quite a few improv theaters - great city for comedy. Only wish the people stayed around after their training to really get a scene going here.
