CodePink's anti-Hummer campaign--love the sign in the pic!

Defend them all you want, I won't argue, but I despise the nasty things.

Edit: but shouldn't this be #1?

5. Soldiers Are Dying In Them
Although the Army does not keep a breakdown of Humvee casualties, almost every week the media reports incidents of soldiers being wounded or killed in their Humvees. Some officers estimate that upwards of 60% of the casualties suffered by their troops occurred in Humvees. Beyond the unavoidable dangers of war, there are two primary causes of the high number of Humvee casualties, faulty armor and terrible maneuverability. Most Humvees being used in active duty in Iraq were originally built with no armor whatsoever, as they were not meant for frontline combat. The newer armored models are not expected to arrive in Iraq until 2005. The weak or non-existent armor of the Humvees allows roadside bombs to rip through the vehicles. This leads to countless deaths and amputees. Beyond the lack of armor a significant percentage of humvee casualties is due to accidents such as tipping over, resulting from the humvee’s poor maneuverability.

2. I would disagree with this point...
>tipping over, resulting from the humvee’s poor maneuverability.

Hummers need to have higher groud clearance for off road capabilities. And in doing so you raise the center of gravity making it less stable and less manuvarable. To compensate, engineers made it as wide as possible. There is not much an enginneer can do to change this and the only option is to better train the drivers..

7. That's true.
I've been in a few, and they are quite stable. I'm sure they compare favourably to the Army's previous GP platform, the Jeep in this regard. Stock military Jeeps could roll on a damp lawn.

It all comes down to driver education.

Or, you could do what the Canadian Forces do, and go for cute!

Meet the Iltis, made under license vrom VW/Audi by Bombardier Canada. Not a great battlefield vehicle, with nearly NO armour plating, but very agile and manoeuvrable.

Not like this:

8. Hummer H2:
A aluminum frame that looks vaguely like a real hummer on a SUV chassis.

A wannabe army vehicle for wannabe soldiers.

10. Canadians....
Why didn't Shrub invade you guys instead? :)

Anyways I don't see an armoured version of the Canadian military vechicle? Also I am certain it has the same problems as the Hummer. And IMHO a soldier driving an armored Hummer in Iraq is going to have it as good as it gets (other than being back home).

12. There isn't an armoured variant.
They all have slightly armoured floors and gas-tanks, but that's it. They don't even come in a hard-roof variant (because it's so temperate here most of the time, so we wouldn't need one!).

They're being phased out for a new, military version of the Mercedes Gelandewagen. I might just re-inlist!

3. I just saw one of these
driving down the road as I pulled up to park in front of my house the other day. Considering my neighborhood, I have no clue why they'd be going by my house.

I didn't know hummer limos even existed; now I find out that they are apparently the hottest ride in town. Would you really want to go to your wedding, or some other significant occasion, in this?

Kudos to code pink.

(and if I saw one of those I'd plaster the hell out of it, civil disobedience be damned!):

How many soldiers died in their Hummer so that you can drive yours to Wal-Mart?

Edit: clarity in SL.

4. Local kid was killed in Iraq in, you guessed it, a hummer accident.
Army told his folks it was 'under investigation'. Don't think they've heard from the army since.

It's a pig car - and like a certain Hollywood action/adventure actor, it evidently is all show and no substance. Silly, silly consumers. The hummer sales staff is laughing all the way to the bank.

Parents of soldiers coming home in boxes do not share the glee.
