Why are Olympic medals listed by country |
|
and not by events completed? Who cares which country has the most..... Also, I noticed the medal winners for shooting have all been china or russia, heh.

Medal count totals by country are not recognized by the IOC. The media started the medal race count when we were still fighting the evil Soviet Union. It's a shame, because when an American medals at, say cross country skiing or fencing, it's as much a miracle as when an athlete from a small country wins any medal. I hate the medal count, it takes away from individual accomplishment and makes it into a country contest!

It's just one way of saying, "we're better than you". It was a lot more played up in the cold war days.
