Anyone watch the Olympics tonight?
I watched the women's gymnastics, and the Romanians are still damn good, and while our girls looked good, this year's team does not look quite as strong as what I've seen in past years. We'll see what happens Tuesday night.

I also watched the swimming, a sport I find hard to watch on TV. There is a lot of hype about the Phelps kid. Seems like a nice guy, but swimming and diving don't interets me much.

Gymnastics, on the other hand (men's and women's) are a testament to what great feats the human body is capable of. Unfortunatley, the fans responded with a collective yawn, as the arena was about half empty!

1. I love swimming.
Phelps is an amazing swimmer, but as usual the hype sets him up for a fall. He wont break Spitz's record, theres very little chance of that. The time where the US could blindly dominate swimming is long gone. But just the same Phelps is young and incredible and definately an athlete worth watching, especially in the IM, but that already happened.

Some great races today though. Some great american swims. Im looking forward tommarow for Phelps versus Thorpe and the backstroke with Peirsol and Krayzelberg.

4. I heard Phelps talking about...
how he wanted an SUV...

"I wanted a cadillac...I said I wanted a big SUV just like you see the rappers got...and i wanted thost big shiny spinning hubcaps too."

He may be the #1 swimmer in the world, but I lost a HUGE amount of respect for him after hearing him make that statement! :nopity:

2. I agree on almost every one of your points.
I really enjoy all the events, but I couldn't watch many of them regularly. Every four years, though, and gymnastics, swimming, diving, etc. are interesting to me.

And you're right - our women (and men, for that matter) have to do better if they want to win anything but the bronze this time. They'll have the chance, though, but I am not a big fan of judge-determined winners. I trust a stopwatch, but the whole judge thing has always bothered me.

As for gymnastics being "testament to what great feats the human body is capable of," I completely agree. Hell, I don't think I could walk the length of a balance beam without falling the hell off, let alone do what those women tonight were doing. All of it is amazing to me.

5. The Chinese women were also really good.
It seemed to me that the USA women starting screwing up when they saw how good the Romanians were doing on the balance beam.

7. Supposedly the empty seats for gymnastics
are due to the fact that it's not a big sport in Greece, plus a lot of people from other countries stayed away due to fears of terrorism.

I watch the Olympics, because it's the only time that my favorite sporting events (gymnastics, swimming, and track and field) get any extensive television coverage. Football and baseball could vanish from the earth and I wouldn't notice except for the additional time freed up in the TV schedule. :-)

9. Olympics
Hi,

I have watched most of the televised Olympics coverage. My favorites are swimming, track and field, and gymnastics. I am really pulling for our gymnastics teams. Especially the one girl who is 25, she really deserves the gold. NBC did a short story on her, and it was touching. You really gotta feel for those gymnasts and what they put their body through. The rivalry between Australia and the US in swimming is awesome to watch also. I am really excited for more coverage!

11. Caught some of the boxing matches today
Edited on Mon Aug-16-04 04:59 AM by mahayasmellbad
It was like that Simpsons soccer match to decide which is the greatest country in the world, MEXICO OR PARAGUAY!!!!! Welterweights from Central Asia/Eastern Europe and Central American and Caribbean countries...did you know that Uzbekistan and Kazakhstan produced world-class boxers? Neither did I. Great stuff, a little cleaner and less brutish than the Casino cockfights you normally see on Saturday afternoons.

13. I enjoy the alternative sports.
By alternative, I mean the things you're normally not exposed to here in America. You couldn't pay me to watch the swimming and gymnastics events, but I will (and have) stay(ed) up all night watching things like Handball (I didn't even know this existed until three hours ago), Water Polo, Badminton, etc.

I also enjoy the Field side of Track & Field.

My big problem is that I'll get absolutely nothing accomplished over these two weeks. I'll watch anything that isn't swimming or athletic gymnastics. The artistic gymnastics (the ball, the ribbon, etc) kind of interests me, though.

17. I saw the swimmng
typical NBC coverage 6 minute mini soap opear on some stud US swimmer, only to have him come in second place to a japanese swimmer. THEN one of the other US swimmers claied that Kitajima used an illegal kick. But eh cable channels actually showed events without those damn commercials , especially USA and Bravo.
