So I'm watching House of Sand and Fog...
....and .. man...

..sometimes a movie can just be too much of a bummer and I have to stop watching.. my girl is still watching....

The guy is such a good guy and his kid gets shot....

.... I dunno, I just don't need a movie to bring me down like that... depressing....

It's gonna take like 2-3 hours of light TV like comedy or discovery channel or something to recover from that...... ;(

I would not have written that into the story if I was them. I'm glad I didn't go to the movies and watch this.. why would I want to pay 8 bucks just to get brought down like that...

Maybe it has a happy ending, I dunno......I quit watching....my girl will fill me in on the ending.

1. I felt the same - in reverse - during Big Fish

... like, it was all such outrageous BS, that there was no point in even watching the rest of the movie.

Yea, I know the ending ... still, it was a waste of a movie, IMO.

4. Seems like it.....
....my beloved better half is still watching it in the other room... I just passed by and saw that now the Iranian father guy is laid out, too.. and more sobbing... ugh..

Now, don't get me wrong.. I a not saying it's a bad movie.. in fact, it's a *great* movie.. if you're into it..

I guess downers like this are just not my thing.. I like light-hearted, fun movies.... or at least one's that have a happy ending...

.. there was no happy ending coming once the point came where his son was shot like that...no matter what happens... so I stopped watching... and you're right, NWH, it seems like it does get worse...

I'm still gonna give it a 3-star rating on Netflix... but 'caveat emptor'(sp?) on this one, for sure.. have some lighter viewing lined up afterwards to clear your head... or some type of lighthearted fun activity..

5. You have to look at the whole picture.. it is a very important movie &...
relevant to current times.

The whole film is an exploration of material security.

It is more importantly an analysis of the struggle of Middle-Eastern Americans in post 9-11 America...

6. My girl filled me in on the ending....
.... I didn't really gather that too much out of the movie... but I guess you could say that....

I didn't see any disrespect towards him for any reason other than him having the house... (then again I missed the last 15 minutes or so)

However in the deleted scenes, one of the directors is telling where he got the idea, and he said that he had known and befriended an Iranian family, the father figure having been a Colonel in the Shah's air force.. who once said to him.."U used to serve kings, now I sell candy to children who don't even know who I am.." He decided while making this movie, "What if I made that Colonel be the one who buys the house?"

That's pretty telling, in a way, of the guy's struggle...

I get alot of the difficulty of him adjusting to American life and no longer being a Colonel but at the same time, being satisfied as long as his family is taken care of... (truly a GOOD man)

It was a great movie... just too sad for me...

Like I said, I'm still giving it a high rating on Netflix...

Netflix rules!

8. a good movie leaves a lot open to interpretation
and that was what I pulled out of it... some people hated it.. I thought it was amazing, it really moved me & made me think...

I loved the fact that there were no real protagonists or antagonists -- no one in the movie was clean -- everyone had their light & darkness... I think the movie was much more successful in conveying that human duality than say "21 Grams"

7. In this case, reading the book first would have been a good thing.

I loved the book but it's not a light read. It's one of those books that marks you.

9. It is a great movie, which didn't get anywhere near the credit it deserved
This movie is one of the best portrayals I have ever seen about how material things, no matter how expensive they are, don't really amount to anything in the long run, even though we are so inclined to assign them such high importance. It also has a subtext of how we are all God's children and can all be decent, caring, and exceptional individuals, regardless of our races or religions, socioeconomic backgrounds, or the differences between us. If we are not on this planet for any other reason, we are here for each other.

Ben Kingsley and Jennifer Connelly were both terrific in this film. And though this movie may be hard to watch, I think the messages in this film really do come through loud and clear.
