or are they just the old ones reprinted?

Those were sure simpler days as these books attest too. Either that or we were all in Stepford denial :D

22. Those books were good.....
because they were rote. I think that students today don't read well because of a lack of emphasis on the basics. When I taught English to non-English speaking adults, I used the Dick and Jane series. It was amazing! By the way, is "Weekly Reader" still around?

35. Oh I don't know - I learned to read on them and I consider myself
a pretty good reader - and I always loved reading. The mistake we make is when we think all kids will learn to read the same way.

52. Still,
there are many children who cannot read, that could if they taught phonics. I learned to read on Dick and Jane, too, but the way. Even as a 6-year old, these babies bored me. I was more into Robinson Crusoe

25. They gave them up when I was in third grade (c.1973)
At my school district. We switched over to the book series with titles like "Panorama" and "Fiesta", that had reading selections from children's books like "Little House On The Prairie".

I could read before I started kindergarten, so I can't say Dick and Jane taught me to read (Mom and Dr. Suess did that), but I do remember them from 1st and 2nd grade reading classes. I only read them in 1st grade-in 2nd grade I was in a special reading class for advanced readers, so we wouldn't get bored and distract the class.

The other books I remember reading are biographies of famous americans from the library. There was a whole series of them, and I don't remember who the publisher or authors were. I read books about Juliet Gordon Lowe, Dolley Madison, Abigal and John Adams, Harriet Tubman, George Washington Carver, most of the Revolutionary War heroes. I particularly liked the books about Dolley Madison and Ben Franklin-when I was a kid I was really interested in the Quakers.

28. Does anyone remember Wagon Wheels workbooks?
My aunt-in-law was a 2nd grade teacher and when she passed away we found that she had saved A LOT of books, looks like from the 60's and 70s. I can't part with books so they're all down in my basement (on bookshelves).

Unfortunately no Dick and Jane - but lots of other goodies.

in fact, if bush used them, he might be a little better in the way he communicates...:)

I actually miss them, somewhere, deep in my mom's basement, they rest, and when I get back East, I'll have to check for them.

Thanks for the memory!!!!!:D

51. the first reading memory for so many
See 'Dick and Jane' — again

By Greg Toppo, USA TODAY

Look, Dick, look!

After 30 years in exile, Dick and Jane, the plucky pair that taught two generations of American children to read, are back in print. (Related story: 2.5 million reissued books sold)

Publishing giant Pearson, which acquired the rights to the original Dick and Jane books when it bought publisher Scott Foresman in 1996, is parlaying millions of Americans' warm memories of first grade into hefty sales — 2.5 million books in under a year and a half, not to mention a raft of other merchandise in the works, from calendars and coloring books to clothing.

But the return of Dick and Jane is for nostalgia's sake only. The books are not for classroom use, the publisher says.
