7. While we're on the subject, how is it pronounced?
I've read the term a gazillion times, but I've only heard it said in conversation once or twice. Is it pronounced "meem" or "mehm?"

I've always thought the latter.

Glad I didn't make an ass of myself in trying to say the word in conversation. Thanks, Will.

24. MEME (sorry Will) is...
Edited on Thu Aug-19-04 12:24 PM by Misunderestimator
A unit of cultural information, such as a cultural practice or idea, that is transmitted verbally or by repeated action from one mind to another

or...

<philosophy> /meem/ Richard Dawkins's
term for an idea considered as a replicator, especially with
the connotation that memes parasitise people into propagating
them much as viruses do.

Memes can be considered the unit of cultural evolution. Ideas
can evolve in a way analogous to biological evolution. Some
ideas survive better than others; ideas can mutate through,
for example, misunderstandings; and two ideas can recombine to
produce a new idea involving elements of each parent idea.

The term is used especially in the phrase "meme complex"
denoting a group of mutually supporting memes that form an
organised belief system, such as a religion. However, "meme"
is often misused to mean "meme complex".

Use of the term connotes acceptance of the idea that in humans
(and presumably other tool- and language-using sophonts)
cultural evolution by selection of adaptive ideas has become
more important than biological evolution by selection of
hereditary traits. Hackers find this idea congenial for
tolerably obvious reasons.

And it is so overly used in discussion of politics that it has become one of those nasty words (at least to me), that just make me think the person using it is an arrogant jerk.

32. "Sophonts"
Tool- and language-using sophonts, none the less.

Wow. Sophont. What a great word! It looks like it means "Wise Being," referring, of course, to hackers, Libertarians, Skeptics, NLP Master Practitioners, Extropians, Speed Seducers and Warbloggers.

I guess it's got about 3 weeks' worth of un-obnoxious use left to it.

Not quite a Sophont. Certainly not an Elephont!

23. even what?
i think 'meme' with a little chapeau over an 'e' means 'even' in la lang franch. i wouldn't know for sure though, because i actually speak no franch whatsoever. but i think at the opening of 'Orphee' a fabulous film by cocteau says something about Orphee being loved by "meme le bete" ("even the animals")...it's pronounced 'may may' sort of.

that is your franch lesson from an english-speaking monoglot for the day. you are welcome. de nada.

29. Thank you, WilliamPitt!
I've been on a one-man anti-meme crusade for a long time.

"Meme" is the way Libertarians, Skeptics, RPGers and other assorted "netizens" say "I can get something for nothing!" and still maintain their scientific mojo.

I've also started referring to another get-something-for-nothing intellectual scam, NLP -- Neuro-Linguistic Programming -- as Anal Pee.

Now that's a meme!
